He would walk to the black car and get another job, sometimes a clean quick hit, other times a grisly centrepiece, and suggest a correction to a scheme he wasn’t supposed to know about. Then the death threat would come, predictable and false, but his heart would hammer a little louder. The man’s fat lips would curl up and the black eyes would fix on him with amusement. He hated him.
Still, he paid well, paid in spice, and ordered executions with a casual air that told of mountains of corpses behind him. They would talk in hints and riddles and bicker. They thought alike, him and the man.
