The cheers were gone. The trophy sat forgotten on a shelf in the classroom. His teammates were still buzzing talking about scholarships, uniforms, and the pros.
Sawamura Eijun... walked home in silence.
The sun had dipped behind the trees by the time he reached the hill. From there, he could see the empty field they’d played on as kids. The old diamond still faintly visible.
A breeze rolled over the dirt, lifting dust into the fading light.
He stayed there for a while.
Just watching.

“Are you going to keep playing?”
His mother’s voice from that morning. Soft. Careful.
“I guess,” Eijun had said, eyes on the floor. “I mean... I don’t hate it.”
She hadn’t asked more.
That night, lying in bed with his glove on the windowsill, Eijun stared at the ceiling.
Everyone kept talking about high school. About Koshien. About scouts.
But when he closed his eyes, all he saw was dirt, a spinning ball, the sound of the mitt.
That was it.
No crowd. No spotlight.

Excerpt from the April 2011 edition of Monthly Baseball Kingdom, written by Owada Akiko, edited by Mine Fujio.
… A heavy struggle for the win during the second to fourth innings, with both aces giving up hits but no runs. Soon enough, one side would have to bend. Unfortunately, it seems Seidou was the first… Furuya Satoru gave up five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bases were loaded. One out. Seidou’s relief pitcher, Sawamura Eijun (#18), stepped up and managed to keep them from scoring, even against Ichidai’s cleanup and fifth batter…
An apology. A request. A denial.
… Despite Sawamura-kun’s impressive pitching, Furuya-kun was subbed back in during the bottom of the 6th inning, and managed to keep Ichidai runless for the rest of the game… We at Monthly Baseball Kingdom are hopeful for how Seidou, and Furuya-kun, will look during next year’s…

Summary
After losing in the semifinals of the Tokyo Metropolitan Spring Tournament (Spring Koshien), Seidou's downfall continued until what happened was inevitable. Leading up to the unprecedented disaster at the start of the Summer Qualifiers. But both Sawamura and Miyuki aren't willing to leave it at that.
This is their tale on how to fix the things that went wrong the first time around. With a lot of soul searching, bro- and romance, introspection, fun, teenagers being teenagers and an exasperated coaching staff, who desperately try to keep the zoo that is Seidou in some semblance of order.
Please enjoy the ride as our kids mature. But above all, enjoy their time spend at Seidou alongside them, so much so that we'd wish it could continue on forever.
side-note: at the beginning there is Furuya-bashing. It serves a purpose but won't continue after Spring/Summer Act I. I have other (good) things planned for him from Autumn onwards.

“Onii-chan, this is Mura-chan, the one I’ve been telling you about!” A frail hand gestured to Asuka’s left.
Just as she said, there was an equally skinny boy in a wheelchair next to her’s with a mask and hat on. Asuka had made sure to tell him all about her best friend that she had made there at the hospital.
Even in the boy’s mostly covered appearance, though, Mei could tell that he was sick. His skin was an ashy tan and his hand in his lap were rather skeletal like and his nails rather brittle and broken down to their beds. The red knitted hat he wore was rather fitting in a way that it made the golds of his honey eyes shine brighter. Despite the outward appearance, the boy looked lively and Mei was thankful. He was thankful that his sister’s best friend was still alive and still there with her. That they both were.
“Sawamura Eijun,” the boy spoke in a horse voice with a small nod and lean forward.
The sick boy just tried to bow, Mei realized, shocked and a bit uncomfortable. How do you respond to something like that? But from Asuka’s stories, it made sense.
“Narumiya Mei,” he responded with a small bow of his own. -

Summary
Players, journalists, and living legends alike all had their fair share of praises for Sawamura, going as far as calling him a once-in-a-lifetime pitcher when he first announced his plans to retire. He’s getting goosebumps thinking about that first pitch he caught from Sawamura along with the last: A fastball, made uniquely his own, with the rapid whip of his arm. Two vastly different pitches, distinguished by years of trial, victory, and experience in between, but bearing the same determination to pave his way to the ace number.
And, well, there he is now, all the way in Cooperstown, his name forever remembered alongside the greatest to ever play baseball.
