'The human probe arrived twenty earth years into Grace’s life on Erid.
As self-proclaimed ‘second contact’, the probe announced that a human delegation would be sent to Erid, and contained detailed notes and data of how they would survive in our environment. They knew nothing of what we had made for Grace, of the biodome and the xenonite suits. Instead, they had come up with their own method of adjusting to life on Erid. Of a deep, cultural exchange.
It was ingenious. It was crazy. It was human to the core of it. I was only a little jealous that we hadn’t thought of it first.'

Clark looks around himself, at the star system that should have been the final resting place of three astronauts, and only two of them are accounted for. The Hail Mary, and Dr Ryland Grace with it, are completely absent.
Clark floats for a moment, looking around himself in honest, total bafflement, as if Ryland Grace is going to appear from thin air if he wills it hard enough. He furrows his brow.
“Huh.”

It’s stupid, but it hurts. He’s stupid. He’s in love.
Five times Jackson Healy wanted to kiss Holland March, and one time he finally does.

Summary
The arrival at Erid is a momentous occasion. Rocky is excited and thrilled. Ryland is overwhelmed. But the reunion is happy, beautiful, amazing.
Or that's what it should have been. Except Rocky gets hurt, Ryland is left to try and communicate with an alien planet, and everyone is scrambling to figure out how to do this. To Grace, this is incredible but also bittersweet - he got Rocky home safely with the taumoeba, now he just gets... to starve. To Erid, this is insane - how did Rocky show up in an alien spaceship with a child???
...
Ryland Grace is stuck trying to speak Eridian, immediately makes himself sound like a child, and Rocky's world and family scramble to help this strange pebble. Misunderstandings galore, alongside hurt/comfort and angst and fluff.

Summary
“You are not sleeping.” Rocky observes after a while longer of Ryland flopping from side to side and huffing in increasing impatience. “You said you would sleep.”
“I’m trying.” Ryland mutters. “It’s not as easy for humans as it is for Eridians.”
Sleep has been an increasingly large problem as of late. Ryland sits around all day, tries to convince himself to do something productive, fails, eats chalky pasty coma-slurry, stares into (literal) space until his eyes start to burn, and then lies awake in bed feeling miserable about his life choices.
Or, as he remembers now, not choices.
It's a long trip to Erid, and then the rest of his life, however long that may be. Luckily, Ryland has the best company in the galaxy along for the ride.

Ryland Grace stood in the corner. Almost exactly as she remembered him, but she had never seen this expression on his face. To call it sadness would be to diminish the anguish carved into his features. It was as if he was grieving his own self, slowly, carefully, a monster digesting its own bones.
But the only monster in this room was her.

When the Kaiju started coming through the Breach, they weren't alone. Now, six years later, Dr. Ryland Grace gets laughed out of a conference for his theories about one of them. It does catch the metaphorical eye of another alien race. So he found himself in one of -the- main Shatterdomes, where a group is working on saving humanity.
Colt Seavers hates when his brother gets that look in his eye, and so worries when he doesn't hear back. Only to get the call his brother is at the Stratterdome, nicknamed that for the woman who runs it. Like hell is he letting his brother near Jaegers without him.

Rocky exhales a puff of air from his radiator the way a human would. He wonders when certain habits became second nature to him, like tilting his carapace and bobbing it up and down as though nodding, and he wonders, too, whether the time spent with Grace hasn't changed them both beyond repair, until they've become almost strangers to their own species. No longer Eridian, no longer human, but simply Rocky and Grace.
