Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.

So in the split second he had to think after seeing the communications dish flying at them through the storm that was chasing them off the planet fourteen days early, he’d pushed Eddie out of the way, hoping like hell it would be enough and knowing he wouldn’t live long enough to find out.

And Abuela had taught him to knit a long time ago, and had encouraged him to get started again by sending him some of her needles and wool, so now he knits to relax. And now he’s looking up more complex patterns online and commenting on a knitting subreddit.
He doesn’t mean to make a friend; it just sort of happens accidentally. They talk a lot in the comments about different techniques and patterns, then move their conversation to a private chat. It starts out knitting based, then the occasional comment about other things, and after a while they exchange real names.

They’re interrupted when Ravi walks a little ahead from them and turns, raising his voice. “Uh, guys?” They look over to where Ravi’s stood, right across from the Castle’s front gates, which are now open.
Huh, weren’t they shut just a moment ago? Eddie frowns, and looks through his camera roll. Yeah, they were. That’s odd. They didn’t hear or see anyone. And no one’s there, welcoming them in, either. Weird.
As they walk inside, the clouds slowly roll over the sky, thick and angry, and as the sun sets it leaves blood red light coating all the walls at Hearst Castle. Or as the ghosts once called it, the Enchanted Hill.
The gate closes behind them.

This was the first time they’d really talked, Eddie not wanting the conversation to end, Buck not appearing to either.
Eddie shrugged his shoulders, looking right at Buck.
“All this Halloween stuff is…whatever. But some of it’s not so bad.”
Buck ducked his head, Eddie just catching a shy smile splaying over his face.
“You uh, you don’t believe in any of it?”
“You mean like the Sanderson sisters?” Eddie shook his head. “No way.”
Buck arched a brow. “Not even on Halloween?”
Eddie tutted his tongue. “Especially not on Halloween.”
Buck shined those pretty blues to him once more, flashing a toothy grin as he nodded toward the note.
“Trick-r-treat.”

Buck frowned, confused, but when he looked down at the screen, he saw it.

“A lot of people used it as a… A way to communicate with you while you were gone.”
Eddie’s voice was tense. Buck couldn’t stop staring, reading the top message from Eddie over and over again, the only one that he could see. It didn’t make sense.
“You don’t have to go through it all but… We missed you, ba– Buck.” Buck slowly looked up from his phone, and there was that look again. Eddie had reached out, the same way he had when Buck came back, fingers brushing across his face gently. Buck wanted to melt into it. He did, later, but in that moment, he had to keep himself together.
“I want to.”
“Okay,” Eddie’s hand had dropped. Buck’s skin felt cold. “Come get me when you’re done.”
