Summary
In a lot of ways, Shane Hollander is uniquely qualified to survive the end of the world.
Not that the world is actually ending.
Probably.
The news rotates between saying it is and saying it isn’t, and Shane does his best to ignore it. His teammates sometimes chatter about it, in the locker room or during breaks at practice. It’s come up with his parents more than once, but he brushes it off, changes the subject. Doesn’t engage.
Just a virus. Like the flu. Highly contagious. Not lethal. Not a big deal.

Because the story isn't about zombies, it's about true love and found family. But also it's sometimes about zombies. And just like the real Heated Rivalry, it's rarely about hockey.
Note: I've added some extra time between All-Star weekend and the Montreal/Boston game for story reasons. As a reward to our boys for putting them in the zombie apocalypse, Shane never plays that game & doesn't get injured and Ilya's dad dies a few days early while he's still in Boston. Because I'm not mean enough to have Ilya stuck in Russia for the apocalypse.

Summary
