Summary
With one final pat-down to confirm that he had everything he needed, he absent-mindedly turned to Daine and pressed a key on a lanyard into her hand. “Lock up whenever you’re ready to leave.”
He continued, clearly misinterpreting the look of wary joy on her face. “I’ll get one made for you on Monday.”
The rest was history. The romantic and ponderous Pacific Rim AU that absolutely no one asked for.

Summary
“I want a baby.”
He was initially certain that he had misheard her but when prompted she repeated the same sentiment, verbatim, like she was telling him what x equaled, which spice tasted best with trout.
“...Did you have a particular one in mind?”
Daine laughed at this and shoved him. “No, I meant mine. I want to have a baby, my own self.”

Summary
One of the trainees tried to grab my waist while I was bending over to grab something. Cloud bit his thumbnail off and then Sarge had him run until he threw up. Kit wanted to send you the thumbnail today but it occurred to me you might do something with it. So she picked out this pine needle instead.
-Daine
It’s a good thought but I don’t think his thumbnail will have entirely regrown by the time I rejoin you. It will be a simple matter to detect him, I’m afraid.
-Numair
Series of shorter romance one-shots, since this is apparently how I'm handling quarantine.

It was only on his face for the barest instant but Lalasa still noticed. She had decades of experience of studying the expressions of men for even these slight changes, being struck or worse in the event she failed to notice that small shift, to be somewhere else in time.
He looked at Daine and his face melted into an expression of fond longing, then pain, then something glum and resigned. He turned his attention back to the lovely auburn-haired woman next to him, to all appearances animated and cheerful.Or: AU set during Page. Lalasa builds a life worth living and helps others do the same (without their permission).

Summary
They both stared at the bed in the Inn, entirely unremarkable in every way. With a shuddering sigh, Daine approached it and sat on the edge. The assortment of expressions on her face was complicated. He could catch momentarily glimpses of embarrassment but also something much sadder.
It would be true to say that this was something he’d fantasized about for years. It would also be true to say that, considering the circumstances, he wasn’t even sure he’d be able to maintain an erection. -

Summary
Daine strode in, seven minutes late now, with an apologetic wave and a noticeable bloodstain on her shoulder. Numair realized with a hot spike of shame that he, along with approximately eight boys in their mid-teens, had paused mid-task and shifted their attention completely just to watch her walk in. He swallowed, rallied through his blush and completed the sentence, silently blessing the self-centeredness inherent to adolescence.

Summary
Onua had asked him for a “conversation”, though that was almost certainly too generous of a noun. “Sometimes I worry that Daine may have gotten too attached to you.”
He shrugged, suddenly wary of that same old accusation. “Is it still too attached if it’s mutual?”
“No, I think you two are very good for each other. If nothing else, I’m thrilled you have someone else to discuss finch beaks with.”
5 + 1. Five times Numair has to discuss his relationship with Daine. -

“Of sorts.” Numair paused for a long moment and then spoke with care. “Daine. You actually believe that you lack sufficient merit to be found attractive by me?”
Daine refused to look away from his shoulder. “Yes, basically. And ‘merit’ isn’t really the right word. There are better things to be than pretty. And in any case, I’m not upset by that anymore. And even when I was, I never held it against you.”
The words came out without any editing from higher thought. “No, that’s not correct. That is, I find you very attractive.” -

Summary
Numair felt himself smile and think that her timeline sounded ideal. She was plenty young. They could have a long stretch as a childless couple, entire years where he wouldn’t need to share her, and still have time for two, or even three, children.
He buttered his own apricot roll and took a huge bite. Numair chewed and swallowed. He replayed the thought he’d just had. He did so again.
The roll fell out of his hand and onto the table.
Or: Snapshots as Numair crafts his marriage in reverse and mostly by accident.

Summary
For a moment, it seemed she’d run out of words. He prompted, trying to keep his tone gentle instead of weary. “Magelet, is this about the boy, the Magpie or the horses?”
Mutely, she held up her necklace for him to see. The badger claw. There was a tiny metal ring, warped enough that it was no longer a perfect circle, also tied to the leather strap. A charm had once hung there and now did not.
Set in an AU four years after ROTG. -

He looks at her with anxious misery on his face and she waits for him to kick her off the team, to wrap her in towels and bubble wrap and lay her gently in a vault. “Will you...” He starts and then tries again, picking up some momentum, “Will you please come stay with me, when you’re discharged?”

“What are you looking at?” She snaps at him like the minority sidekick in an old movie for all that he was probably just checking for bruises or a nameless tension in her neck. Carb-laden meals, conversations and another soppy Coda to One.

“What was that about ovulation?” Damn him. Damn him and his bat-like hearing. Even though he says that last word like it’s the name of a demon or a synonym for genocide, which is hilarious.

Summary
Of lessons in humanity, the wisdom of drunkards, the people that keep you whole and finally having that chat with your partner. Sort of.
“So what?” Stark spoke not out of callousness but a respect earned under impossible conditions. “She’ll escape in, what, twenty minutes? We just need to remember to bring enough body bags when we go pick her up.”
