They were still in the middle of the room. Still close. Sherlock's hand was still on John's neck. Still lingering. Still warm on John's skin.
God, was he afraid.
He was still afraid that John would break free from the embrace, put on that hateful mask of half hearted indifference and bravery and leave the air around Sherlock cold like before. His cheek touched by the harsh, cold air around him instead of the soft grey of John's hair. His lungs empty of his smell.
His arms empty and useless.
Had it only been a moment?

It’s all fun and games, hahaha, until they find out Lestrade is in dire financial straits (dog needs emergency surgery, he’s putting his kid through gymnastics training, I don’t know, something), and they decide to fake a relationship to win the pool for him. Sherlock figures out the day and way that Lestrade thinks it’s going to happen, and they act it out. It’s all for a good cause, fake relationship style, until it’s not."

Summary
"Just how many second chances do you think we're going to get? What if this had really been the last?"
The strain is beginning to show on all of them. Mycroft is showing his heart. John is sitting at another bedside watching Sherlock hover on the brink, but this time it's more than his life at stake. Mary is sharing a secret with the most unlikely of confidantes. Changes are coming, and nothing will ever be the same.
This story begins with Sherlock leaving at the end of HLV and returning at the end of TAB, and it's my take on where series four is headed. It's the third part of a triology, but it stands on its own. Threads from Something Broken and Something Borrowed are included, but there is no requirement to read either of those before this one. If you haven't read those, I hope you enjoy this one enough to give them a look.

I think this was the best way to handle the aftermath of HLV I've ever seen.
Mary was the one who arranged the Moriarty Broadcast. She was working for Mycroft the whole time! She was put in John's life to keep him alive! yes, yes, yes.
She knew that if Sherlock left again, it would kill John. And she loved him, so she couldn't let that happen.
Sherlock ACTUALLY overdosed on that, as he SHOULD, FFS. He went to a hospital and it was very bad.
But Mary wasn't going to give up. John spent all his time sitting beside Sherlock's bed, finally realising where he belongs.
After they got home from the hospital, he decided to leave her.
She told him Sherlock knew he loved him.
And then faked pregnancy pain.
John stayed with her after he saw his baby moving.
Sherlock, convinced that John is staying with him solely because he feels guilty, did what he thought was the only way - he started to pretend he doesn't need him. He went back to drugs. He used Jared as John-substitute. That part was painful to read.
But then he got kidnapped. Why? Because of Mary.
And they tortured him and so he decided to delete everything in order to protect...guess who.
That lead to a complete memory loss of everything after he got from Serbia.
Kind of an ideal situation. -

oh, how beautiful was that, I can't even.
John's POV.
Post HLV, with a very believable twist: Mary forced Sherlock into "an Agreement"
She cheats on him, he leaves.
She gives birth to his daughter and there are three people rushing to the hospital - John, Sherlock and Roger, an ordinary man who looks at Mary just like Sherlock looks at John.
So John understands. And Sherlock is at his side every step of the way.
Brilliant characterisation. -

It doesn’t escape his notice that this was how Sherlock would sometimes recall him to reality a lifetime ago, when his lungs would feel clogged with sand and he thought he could hear sniper fire whispering in his ear. He hasn’t forgotten, either, how utterly terrifying those moments used to be.
