The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes.

Shane rested his forehead against Ilya’s, closing his eyes. “I’m gonna ride you, is that okay?”
Ilya nipped at his bottom lip. “I don’t know, let me think. This is same as asking me, is Shane Hollander the best hockey player in the world? Obviously yes.”
And oh, the honest praise was all worth it for the private smile that lit up Shane’s face right then. He kissed Ilya once, slow and sweet. “Shut up,” he murmured, smiling into it. “You’re an asshole.”
Ilya was a little achy with how happy he was, such a wild contrast to his overwhelming grief only moments ago. “I finally admit you are better than me, and now I am an asshole? I think not, Hollander.” He gripped Shane’s hips and flipped them over, the sound of Shane’s breathy laughter while Ilya kissed him into the mattress like medicine for his soul.
Episode 5 in depth: the beach, the all-star game, and if Shane and Ilya made love in that hotel room before confessing their love.

And while Ilya knows he’d fall in love with every single version, he’s happy he gets this one. Happy he gets the Shane who lets himself be trusting, and vulnerable, and honest.
It makes Ilya wish he could have loved Shane earlier - makes him wish he could have known him longer. But he’s just glad he gets to do it now, here, like this.

Shane should be here right now, should be in Ilya’s house. Ilya should be teasing him about being picky while going through delivery options for food on his phone. Shane should be discovering that Ilya has ginger ale in the fridge and the protein bars Shane mentioned liking in an interview in his pantry. He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. Shane should be fed and showered and ready to curl up in bed with Ilya tonight.
But Shane is in a hospital.And Ilya is here.
He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.
“Hey, you’ve reached Shane Hollander-”
Ilya closes his eyes and lets Shane’s voice roll over him.

Or, Shane gets rightfully fed up after the first month of Hayden's behavior towards Ilya. Punching Ilya was the final straw, so he tells Hayden to pretend he never found out. Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice.
He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.
Impact.
The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

Almost in shock at his own words and how quickly they spill from his mouth, his eyes widen until they almost roll across the room and his heart is pounding so hard he's convinced it could burst out of his chest at any moment.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
Ilya remains completely still. He doesn't move. He doesn't answer. He doesn't breathe. For a full second, Shane thinks maybe he dreamed it. That he said it out loud inside his own head and not in the real world. That he still has time to backtrack, to pretend it didn't happen.
Then Ilya raises his head. Very slowly. He's scary.
"What?"
Or: Shane has another idea. A better one. Terrifying, but better.
