Summary
Eddie never had an issue with his relationship with Steve being kept a secret; he knew the dangers of the general public of Hawkins discovering good ol' golden boy Steve Harrington was dating Hawkins' resident freak. Besides, the most important person in his life outside of Steve, Wayne, knew and that was more than enough for Eddie. If Eddie was being honest anyways, he didn't know who Steve had to tell. The truth of the matter was that Eddie was completely fine with keeping his love for his Stevie pure and untainted by the hatred of his peers. But, he didn't realize that would mean hearing the love of his life died while drinking coffee and watching the morning news.
Or, six months of love goes up in flames when Steve dies in the Starcourt fire with Chief Hopper.

Steve's jaw tightens. The word sticks, barbed and sour, tangled with every time he was told to take what he wanted, never show the want. Pride lodges in his throat like a stone, polished by years, heavy enough to choke on.
He swallows it down, and - "Please."
Eddie's grip shifts, pressing both wrists above Steve's head against the mattress. The sound Steve makes is involuntary - broken, relieved - his spine arching before his brain catches up.
"Better," Eddie murmurs, his free hand dragging down Steve's chest, nails leaving faint tracks that burn sweet and sharp. "Keep that attitude in check for me."

Somewhere along the line, though, between right hooks and cigarette burns and the smell of white lightning that never seems to fade, Eddie discovered that the word “no” didn’t feel good in his mouth. Twisted his tongue up all weird, stung like acid when he swallowed it, burned a hole in his stomach that ate away at every cell and atom in his body.
He never got to try it out much, and the few times he did proved fruitless in the end. What’s the point, he figured, of mustering up all that courage to grit out a word that stings like poison if it’s only going to be spat back in his face anyway?

Buying the old mansion on the water, fixing it up, and then painting it black. An eyesore in the middle of the other cookie cutter houses, all painted very appropriate shades of white.
Gareth named it The Frog Pot, declaring that he's sure Eddie's slowly boiling himself alive in that heat trap. Eddie has embraced the name. Ceramic frogs decorate the porch, the yard. The uglier the better. All the eccentricities he's ever had, growing worse with age. With boredom. With becoming a widower. She'd been the one to keep him grounded, and now he's untethered.
