“Oh,” says Barbatos.After eight years of silently listening to the radio show that saved his life as a teenager, Xiao finally calls in after the host, Barbatos, disappears for a week. He expects that to be the only time he calls, but Barbatos seems to have other plans. One thing leads to another, and Xiao ends up calling the station each week – until a disastrous realisation at Barbatos’s first live performance.

It takes her a few tries, dehydrated lamina crumbling and fraying under her fingers if she exerts too much force, but eventually Ping succeeds. She pretends not to notice Guizhong cheating by weaving threads of Geo to reinforce the thinnest leaves she handles.
The little bird looks on, wide-eyed, as she pushes Adeptal energy into animating the sycamore leaf, and her butterfly flutters in languid circles around the room. It twirls and flits and dives, half-translucent wings leaving kaleidoscoped impressions of sun glimmers on Ping’s pale sandbearer walls.
Guizhong sighs, the little bird’s bed shifting under her weight as she sprawls her entire upper body across its surface. Her eyes are half-obscured by her fringe from where she peers up at her butterfly, chin resting on folded arms, gaze trailing after its flight.
“How I dread Autumn’s end,” she whispers. “Yet endlessly in the wind you dance, little fiction of my hands.”
Or, two thousand years (and counting) of Liyuen history told through the lenses of others' eyes.

Xiao freezes. His gaze flickers towards the obstructed balcony. “You planned this," he accuses. There is still the window, he supposes, but he doubts the Anemo Archon simply forgot about its existence. It being left open is in equal measure a gesture of good faith and an unspoken challenge. He doesn't think he could live it down if the god of songs waxes poetry about his embarrassing escape.
He sits down.
Venti just laughs at his scowl and raises his hands in surrender, "you've caught me.” Then, his expression sobering, “I think it would be good for you to have someone to talk about your…past experiences with. Someone who understands the weight of what you were made to do."
“You need to learn to stop making everyone else’s business your own," Xiao tells him flatly.
Or, Xiao gets bullied into therapy, accidentally incites a riot, makes bird kebab, and gets harassed by extroverts that want many conversations. Precisely in that order.

The chatter in the room immediately quieted as Yae Miko stopped just inside of the doorway. The small smile against her features was relatively impassive, though there was a flash of mischief in her eyes that Venti did not miss as she eyed the gathered students.
“So, is this our turnout for this year? Not bad, but I’ve seen better.”
“Thank goodness I’ve already filled one position for a stagehand, otherwise who knows if enough people would volunteer?” She stepped away from the door and gestured with her hand for whoever was behind her to enter.
A moment later, a scruffy-looking boy followed her into the room, hands buried in his black zip-up hoodie and looking very much like he wished he was anywhere else, judging by his refusal to look at anything but the floor.
“Everybody, this is Xiao. He will be joining us to help for the entire process of bringing this play to life.”
Venti felt a little bolt of panic in his chest.
Because that was the same Xiao who had just recently been caught fighting another student. The same Xiao who had a reputation for not giving a single shit about anyone or anything in school.

“…You know how I am,” The Wanderer replies, meeting their gaze with a frown. “No promises.”
The Traveler merely smiles at him, turning back around. “Right. Well, I’ll leave you to it.”
“Hm.”
Nahida temporarily loses most of her memory, and the Wanderer is tasked with supervising her until she recovers.

He’s hurting again.
When was the last time he had visited Xiao? A week ? For someone who has watched nations rise and erode into dust, time has always been a slippery thing. Years fold into one another as night and days blur. All he knows is that it's been too long. Yet the thought of seeing Xiao excites and unsettles him at the same time. Venti swiftly makes his way to the source.
