She had woken among ash and embers. Smoke had curled in lazy spirals above her head, blurring the jagged black shapes of fallen shelves and splintered wood. The acrid tang of scorched parchment clogged her nose, and every breath felt like pulling fire into her lungs. Pain was everywhere: sharp in her side, dull and aching in her limbs, throbbing in her skull.
Her mind was a fractured mirror. Pieces of herself slid and scraped against each other, but the reflection was incomplete. Still, some stubborn instinct had dragged her upright.
