Summary
The lights of the bar are low enough that JJ can almost pretend to be anonymous. She sits in a corner booth, her own safe little pocket of shadows. It’s a space where no one knows her name, her history, or the ache she carries like a second skin. The music pulses in her ears, almost drowning out the thoughts that threaten to come pouring out of her at any moment.
In the wake of loss and unresolved feelings, JJ confides in Emily the uncertain truth that she may have never really loved Will the way that she should have. A year after his death, her grief still feels fractured and uncertain. When a new case arises, tension between JJ and Emily flares—Emily benches her, JJ defies the order, and the choice ends in bloodshed. Michael is okay. Kids are resilient and even with Henry off to college, he’s got no shortage of male role models to choose from. Luke is his favourite, which JJ is pretty sure is only because Luke is Aunty Penelope’s favourite and Michael worships the ground she walks on. So, Michael has Luke and Penelope, Henry has Spence, and JJ has all of them and none of them. Most days it feels like she’s on her own.
