    Summary

"Y'know," Lance's voice was a soft, slurred murmur against the pillow, so close it vibrated through Keith's own skull. "I'm glad... I'm glad it was you that stayed."

Keith's breath hitched, his lungs seizing in his chest. Don't say it, he chanted silently, a desperate prayer to any deity that might be listening. But Lance, in his current state, had no access to Keith's internal monologue. "Even with all the... the bickering. And the fighting."

A small, breathy giggle escaped him at his own muddled phrasing. "I'm... I'm really glad I met you. We make a good team, don't we?"

    Or

A diplomatic mission to Ryxara was supposed to be simple—formal talks, polite smiles, a few days of uneasy peace.
But something in the palace is wrong.

Or at least, Keith thinks it is.

It’s hard to tell where genuine danger ends and his own jealousy begins, especially when Lance has always been good at drawing attention without even trying.
He’s not sure if he’s seeing patterns where none exist—if it’s paranoia, jealousy, or instinct screaming too loudly to ignore.

But when Lance falls violently ill after the masquerade ball, Keith is forced to consider a possibility far worse than being wrong.

    Summary

Keith made him feel vulnerable, like a grass sprout pushing up through the ashes left by a forest fire. The words unravelling in him threatened to spill from his lips, racing against the burn of tears in the corners of his eyes. He forced them all back.

“Nothing’s wrong,” he lied. It almost tasted like the truth.

Lance is not coping. Keith notices.

    Summary

It’s started, the apathy. It’s not even a struggle that he’s losing, because you can’t lose if you’re not playing.

He hasn’t touched his skincare routine in months. He can’t remember the last time he looked at his console. He’s starting to forget the sound of his own voice. It’s getting increasingly harder to force himself out of bed.

    Lance is very, very afraid.

    Summary

Lance, after the Rover explosion, lost two things.

First was almost the entirety of the skin of his back. Ripped to shreds, it was. His head, by some miracle, had remained largely unscathed — except for the concussion that went untreated for too long, that affected his brain in more ways than he was willing to admit, that made memory recall a lot harder than it used to be — and his jeans had done a pretty good job of protecting the backs of his legs.

But his thin t-shirt did nothing to protect his back. And there was only so much the pod could do.
Along with the skin of his back, the explosion had stolen his hearing.

Not completely. He wasn’t completely deaf. But he was no Altean superhuman, and the delicate hairs in his ears that allowed his brain to pick up sound waves have shattered so close to the explosion. Broken. He’d taken some sort of magnifying device himself to assess the damage, the night he fell out of the healing pod, panicked because his fucking ears weren’t working and dreading what he would find: hundreds of little hairs, much smaller than they were supposed to be. Too small to hear words, to hear people speak.

    Summary

    The dumb one.

Lance hates the tone in which Lloid says it, hates the flush of embarrassment and the whirl of anxiety and anger in his stomach. Veronica giggles at the joke and Lance refocuses his eyes, his skin buzzing.

    Or

Lance doesn't want to be reminded of what his teammates think of him. Even if it is just a joke.
