    Shoes was helping herself to the parts of a motorcycle that was way too nice to be left unattended at night in this part of town. It was sure to be a decent pay out, until she heard the stupid robot voice call out from behind her, “You know, this is like some fucked-up, backwards deja vu for me.”

    She tensed for a moment but didn’t bother turning to see the Red Hood there. At some point after the big bad crime boss started giving her tips on how to get away with stealing or offering her his fucking jacket in the cold, he started to lose his edge of intimidation. Instead she focused on removing the back tire of the bike and saying, “This is just some routine maintenance.”

    At first she thought maybe she had just collapsed on her floor after a concussion… again. But this wasn’t her room. The carpet was too nice and the lights too bright. Her room was mostly natural light and a lamp in the corner, but this was a bright fluorescent. And there were no windows here.

    She looked around and she just knew it was a jail cell.

    A nice one, perhaps, but a jail cell still.

    Someone had kidnapped her.

    Watchtower County was a really tiny town composed of about one hundred by one hundred square feet of forest and maybe seven houses all compacted right next to each other. She was exaggerating of course, but to the twelve-year-old eyes of Cassandra Sandsmark, that’s what it felt like she was approaching driving through densely packed woods on the single lane road one late morning in July. All she wanted for her summer was to read comics or maybe have a little adventure, until she learns that Watchtower County is much more exciting than it appears, perhaps more exciting than she can handle.
