Her torture at the hands of the Cardassians and the loss of their baby are both enough to knock Kathryn sideways all on their own. This twisted combination amounts to a bespoke knife to the gut, and Seska just has to keep twisting.

Summary
The captain nods once more, curtly, and she says almost dismissively, “We weren’t ourselves.”
One thought pipes up from the wreckage, and Tom expresses it without thinking: “Or maybe we were more ourselves than we normally allow.”

Summary
“If we were married, we could request to serve on the same ship after you’ve graduated,” Kathryn realizes.
Tom nods. “And we would be each other’s next of kin, if anything happened. Which for some reason feels a lot more important, knowing that you’ll be serving under my father.”
This all makes a very enticing kind of sense.

Summary
Kathryn realizes instantly when this must have happened. She’d been bitten, an angry red welt appearing on her neck, but the Doctor had checked her over and declared, at that point, that there was nothing to worry about. So she’d gone about her day, and later Tom... Tom kissed it better. Among other things.

Summary
Tom isn't at his father's funeral.
It had been a shock to her, to hear about the transporter accident. She’s still not sure how to feel about the fact that her thoughts immediately went to Tom, and only Tom. No consideration for the rest of the family, or for Owen’s close friends, many of whom she knows too. No, she could only think about Tom. Poor Tom, and whether she would see him at the funeral.
The level of disappointment she feels at his absence is frankly embarrassing.

It hadn’t happened again, after the time in the brig. Not like this. Tom is willing to admit that a part of him was hoping it would, but the timing of this is very, very bad.

Summary
The knowledge that Kathryn Janeway is watching him is very different from the knowledge that he’s being scrutinized by a security guard. It feels... intimate, somehow. The hairs on the back of his neck stand on end, and he fights to keep himself still. He isn’t allowed to think about intimacy in relation to Captain Janeway. He’s restrained himself from that kind of thinking for the past three years and he is not going to let himself down now just because he’s suffering the effects of her punishment.
What the hell is she doing here in the middle of the night, anyway?
