The first thing Paige was aware of was the throbbing pain in her head. The one that felt like someone was playing a drum inside her skull. The second thing she was aware of was the hard slab of concrete beneath her body, the same one that was sending a chill through her entire being. The third thing was that she must have fallen asleep. Somehow. On this hard concrete slab.
And the next thing she was aware of? That she literally had no memories at all, except her name. And neither did the other three women who were with her.

Her mother frowns, worry and confusion at war in her face. “How I could what, Piper?”
“How you could give her away,” Piper says, haltingly. A sob is working its way up her throat. She feels untethered, undone somehow, in a way that can never be fixed. “You gave her away.”
Her mother’s face melts into one of understanding. “This is about Paige?”
