There it was. That hollow feeling inside of his chest like his heart had disappeared entirely. Everything seemed to go still. It was a phantom ache. It happened with his missing eye on occasion. It wasn't real. It was the frayed nerve endings of a missing limb and the faulty signals they were sending to his brain.
Daniel was gone and it was as though Armand had cut off his hand with Nicki's axe.
Daniel was never coming back.
Then…footsteps.
Or: Post-Akasha reunion fic…maybe…if a person with the wrong face and wrong voice and wrong body can convince Armand that's what's happening. Good thing Armand has no trust issues whatsoever and is used to good things happening to him.

The man crumpled up the paper in his hand rather dramatically. He met his eyes. Daniel didn’t expect to feel a strange rush when he did, but his unnaturally amber eyes stared into him in a way Daniel hadn’t expected. He had never seen eyes like his before, so captivating and piercing. After a few seconds of silence, Daniel realised the Frenchman was waiting for him to speak.
“Yeah, I recognise my own writing. Now, how did you-”
“Why did you write this?”
“Look, man, I-”
“What didn’t you get?”

It’s bullshit, Daniel thought, on his third try of the night. He wasn’t sure why he kept calling, searching for someone to answer his prayers, he guessed, but the endeavor seemed to be futile. So, there he was, at two in the morning in New York, New York, sitting on his fire escape at the ripe age of sixty-eight, trying and failing for the third time that night to save his life via iPhone 13.
OR
Daniel gets his Parkinson's diagnosis and considers killing himself about it. Armand, ever the level-headed vampire, decides that he needs to Fix This!
