Summary
The Greats kept talking, but their words drifted past him as he stared at the sky. If he ignored the stone he was sitting on, he could pretend that he was relaxing in the yard while waiting for one of his friends to come by. Maybe his mom would come outside to call him in to finish a chore he was trying to dodge.
If he really tried, he could pretend the town’s stench was the offspring of a bonfire. The roars in the distance could be the village laughing and celebrating for one reason or another. Maybe someone had gotten married. Maybe The Greats had returned from a particularly perilous journey.
Maybe if he closed his eyes, Virion would open them in his bed and could dismiss this all as some strange dream.

For the first day of open slopes, he’d figured there would be more people rushing to join and take advantage of the fresh opportunity like him. But, past the tired-eyed driver who looked absolutely done with life and someone passed out in the back who had definitely missed their stop, Tubbo was the only passenger left and thus the only one to stand and leave as three or four others took the chance to slip past him and move in.
And as he stepped out and took the small trek up to the gates, he realized why.
The resort was closed.

God. His head hurts like a bitch. He’s had a migraine for two straight days. He grimaces through the pain and throws some questions into his head, hoping for answers.
Can we leave Galloway?

Will anything stop us when we get to the border?

The answers make him feel better by only a miniscule amount. He doesn’t trust this… weird sixth sense he’s acquired. Kian said it was some kind of “power,” like the heroes running around in their underpants on TV that have been crawling out of woodwork since the seventies, but that’s bullshit. It’s all bullshit, because those heroes are probably getting their powers from like—government made chemical potions or some shit.
He asks one more question, glancing back at Rolan, Kian, and Becky in his truck.
Can I trust them?
Yes, comes the undeniable, steadfast answer.

The Oversea air is warm, assailing on every inch of skin, and it only worsens as she flops over onto the dock. Just the barest tip of her tail is still submerged.
Gillion’s careful, curious eyes peek out through the water. He watches as Edyn takes her very first breath, lungs contracting and expanding. It's... an indescribable feeling. Horrifically strange, and yet too natural to deny. She takes one breath in, then another. And another. Just practicing with the expansion of her lungs. Before she can question it, Gillion has risen to join her on the cold stone. Above water.
"I don't — " Gillion coughs.
"You're doing it! You — we're doing it!"
When she is seventeen, Edyn Tidestrider steals her brother away from the Elders and flees.

Not a lot of people knew Dakota Cole was Native.
Dakota didn’t even fully know if he was himself until recently. His aunt had said he was Ojibwe, but what good did that mean when he didn’t feel Native? When his parents weren’t around to tell him what that meant, when he grew up never feeling a part of that culture, when he was white passing that nobody ever questioned what race he was?
How could you really claim you were something if you had never felt like you were ever that?
