    Nanaki always imagined what having a brother. 

    They’d play together, naturally, until the sun set. 

    Maybe they’d bicker, but it would all be in the name of fun, never any heat in it, and always make up when they did fight for real. 

    They’d roll their eyes, and have jokes that only the two of them knew the punchline to, like a secret language made of shared experiences, little moments all their own. 

    At night, they’d sleep under the stars, safe in knowing there was always someone in their corner. A friend he never had to ask to be friends with. 

    Someone just for him.

    “Hey. Cloud,” he tries, quiet and stern.

    Cloud snaps awake with all the expected violence, sharp intake of breath, shoulders locking, hands tightening on the wheel and trying to yank it to the right - which would have sent them off the side of the road were Barret not still holding the wheel with one hand. His head swivels to look at Barret, eyes wide and foggy with sleep.

    So, third option then. Just plain old sleep deprivation.

Starting from his fainting spell at the Corel Reactor to the Sleeping Forest at the end of the game each of Cloud's "episodes" is told from the point of view of Tifa or Barret. These are their inner thoughts and feelings as they see Cloud struggle on the journey. No spoilers for the game. Not Beta read. First fic.
