“Happy All Hallow’s Eve,” the master of this slice of the feywild greeted. “I was wondering if I would see you again.”
“I, of course, would never pass up the opportunity...so long as you’ll invite me in,” Essek said, remaining on the edge of the space. The barrier between him and the fey pulsed and stretched taut over Essek’s skin. The fey smiled a sharp knowing smile.
“Of course,” he said. “You are welcome here, and are owed all of my hospitality.”
Essek has a friend he only gets to see four times a year, and enjoys taking advantage of his hospitality. Especially on All Hallow's Eve.

Except, he doesn’t even make it to the threshold to cross the hallway of the ship. His feet stop. A complete, precise standstill.
Rocky had chittered at him, a short burst of notes, monosyllabic in Eridian despite the layers of chords. He registered it not as any word, yet the command still struck.

Heeled. Like a dog.

“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.
“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.

They’d come a very long way just for Grace to give up and die at the last hurdle, both physically and emotionally. The Tau Ceti system was a long, long way away now, and Grace had faced not one but two highly emotional suicide missions. After being kidnapped and held for ransom by one of the city's younger and more reckless thieves guilds, Azune is injured and traumatized to the point where his friends can't rescue him without hurting him worse. Letting Bolaire put him on/putting on the mask lets Hal, Bolaire, and Murray get him out of there, but taking him off again will be a lengthier, and gentler, process.
