    Lan Wangji does not reply. He does not know how to.

    ‘But you,’ Wei Wuxian says, whispers, with the slightest hint of a smile that hurts, ‘But you, Hanguang-jun, you have people who love you, people who care for you. You have a family.’

    Lan Wangji nods, slowly, eyes never leaving Wei Wuxian’s as he reaches out and brushes a stray strand of hair from Lan Wangji’s cheek.

    ‘Why did you risk it all for me?’

    ‘I,’ he says, and then stops. It’s too much to explain, but he tries anyways. ‘Would not want to be without Wei Ying.’

    But right when Wei WuXian’s fist nears Jin ZiXuan’s face, they’re suddenly engulfed in smoke. It bursts and fills the room, blinding everyone in darkness. They cough violently, suffocated by the heavy pressure of the dark smoke. But they didn’t just feel like the air is being squeezed out of their lungs. They feel their Qi react uncontrollably.

    It isn’t smoke. It is resentful energy.

    It swirls and thickens, sucking spiritual energy from the cultivators trapped in the room like a leech. Then, there’s a flash of purple and the cackle of lightning. What comes after is a loud roar, sounding strangely like Jiang Cheng’s voice, only deeper and older.

    “WEI WUXIAN!!!”

     

    When Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Lan Wangji, and Lan Xichen's future selves, along with an unfamiliar child, are suddenly transported 6 years into the past, they find out that the future is not as bright as they hope for and that maybe Jiang Fengmian really shouldn't have brought Wei Wuxian to Lotus Pier when he was young.

    But there's a lot of things about the misunderstood villain that everyone has yet to realize.

    At sixteen Wei Wuxian is—through some strange twist of fate, or a nick in the layer between parallel universes, who knows—out of the blue confronted with that one incense burner dream one night.

    While his curious mind is left unable to stop poking at this new perspective on Lan Wangji, circumstances in the Cloud Recesses begin to change and Wei Wuxian is suddenly presented with life-altering opportunities.

    Maybe Gusu isn’t so bad after all?

    (Or alternatively: The fic where I get to give Wei Wuxian the academic scholarship he deserves while simultaneously getting him hitched early on.)
