Jabber wants to answer. Wants to tell him “I’m okay. I’m just... like this.”
But he can’t. Not like this. Not mid-heat, sweaty and shaky and not himself. He doesn’t want Zanka to hear him like that. Doesn’t want to drag Zanka into this mess.
So he stays in the nest. Listens to the silence after the call ends. Lets the ache come back in.
After a few rings the choker stops ringing.Jabber tells himself it’s better this way. For both of them.

“Keith,” he called out again, louder now. “Keith, —”
Keith stirred weakly.
A broken sound left his throat, somewhere between a groan and a breath. His head rolled slightly toward Lance, eyes fluttering open for half a second before slipping shut again. He was being half-dragged, half-carried by the Galran guards as he slipped in and out of consciousness. The blood dripped down from the wound on his head, past his eye and down to his chin.
Lance decided that he would do whatever he had to do to keep them together. They cannot get separated. Keith needs him. He can’t lose Keith.
“That’s it,” Lance said, voice shaking. “That’s it, okay? You’re doing great. Just—just keep breathing.”
Keith and Lance end up stranded on a planet after a mission goes wrong.
But that's only where their troubles begin.
Captured and tortured relentlessly, Keith finds something out about himself that shocks him to his core.
Terrified and delirious, Lance doesn't take it too well.

“You can stay the night here.” Keith ventured, seeing the way the other man staggered to the door. “If you um–want. Sleep some of the drunk off.”
Lance leaned his back against the door. His eyelids drooped. “Nah, I’m good. It’s not like I’m your boyfriend or whatever.”
Keith blinked, taking in the words.
“Yeah.” He felt his eyes burn, looking down.
Lance opened the door and strolled out. “Goodnight, Keith.”
He got no reply.

Keith always felt bad about having feelings for Lance. He felt like he was doing something forbidden by thinking about his straight friend that way, if Lance found out about the truth, he'd probably feel betrayed and disgusted after being in love with Allura for years. But after a conversation where Lance admits to kissing James Griffin and that there's a good chance they'll start dating, Keith knows he never had a chance.
