“Do you actually have a place to live?”
Dennis has never been a good liar, and Jack Abbot’s unrelenting stare might as well be a polygraph test.
“I’m currently between places,” he admits.
Abbot works his jaw, head tilting to the side as he continues to assess Dennis like he’s a patient in his ED.
“Do you own a car?” He asks, his voice sounding softer to Dennis but maybe it's just dampened by the sound of his own pulse in his ears.
“Not at the moment, no, I’m actually-”
“Between cars?” Abbot finishes for him.
Shame pushes Dennis’s head down. “Yeah, something like that.”
Abbot continues to stare at him -does this guy ever blink?- before he sighs and shakes his head.
"Alright, pack your shit," He orders, clearly having heard enough.

Summary
TITLED CHANGED FROM "I'm Fine (He Wasn't) TO THE CURRENT TITLE
Robby didn’t take the bait, “I want you to stop pretending you’re fine when you clearly aren’t.”
That landed harder than Dennis expected. He didn’t respond right away, mostly because he didn’t have a good comeback for that one. And because the way Robby said it, low and direct and looking right at him, did something irritating to Dennis’s pulse.
Dennis huffed softly but didn’t fight him, mostly because the dizziness still hadn’t completely settled, a clear indication of head trauma, and the idea of moving too quickly sounded like a terrible plan. He tried to sit still while Robby worked, though the close proximity made him uncomfortably aware of just how serious Robby suddenly looked. Did he always look this way during cases? Robby was close enough that Dennis could feel the faint warmth of him, could smell the mix of leather. And for one brief absurd second Dennis wondered if he was imagining how close Robby actually was.
Or
Dennis Whitaker gets hit by a car while riding a bike. He tries to tough out his injuries after the crash, only to find himself back at the Pitt injured, stubborn, and with Robby watching far too closely.

“You’re gonna tell me you’ve felt nothing? Nothing from these last ten months?”
Robby feels like he could die. If Dennis pulled out a gun and shot him in the street Robby would let it happen and bleed out right here on the pavement. He almost wishes he does.
“I’m twice your age, kid. Doesn’t matter what I’ve felt.”
Dennis frowns, “M’ not some stupid kid.”
“I’m your boss.”
“No, you aren’t.” His voice has some jagged edge to it, harsh, “Not right now. Not tomorrow, or the next day. Not next month. Do you even plan on coming back, Dr. Robby? Or do you plan on getting killed on that fucking bike.”

After a chaotic day at the Pitt on the 4th of July, the crew goes out for Javadi's birthday and to celebrate Robby's sabbatical. Dennis especially needs a drink after how Robby has been touching him after he got whacked in the head by a patient.
Robby later finds himself driving Whitaker home.

Summary
Whitaker liked being called "Huckleberry."
It was dimunituve, the result of a quick once-over and easy acceptance.
He'd gladly be the farm boy. The rat catcher. The sad-eyed, probably homeschooled country nobody who's both doing his best and doesn't know any better. Those parts of him were only the half of it, and he hoped that maybe the other half would wither away into nothing if he kept it in the darkness for long enough.
Huckleberry. It was at least better than everything else they used to call him—even his first name, which he remembered with a wince echoing against cold wood and stained glass. Spat out into the dirt, like a slur, around snarled lips like a hex.
Huckleberry. Whitaker. Farm Boy. Hell, he'd even take Myrna calling him Pussycat over-

Whitaker wasn't sure if hearing Dr. Robby call him by his first name was salvation or some form of punishment from above.

The well-known quote Dennis murmured was somehow louder than any scream the two had heard in their entire lifetime.
They were both still, their breathing heavy, when Dennis straightened his back, hands bracing the edge of the counter as he glanced at Jack and Robby’s direction.
“I am the angry man in our house,” Dennis confessed, his smile sad, and the look in his eyes had the two on the cusp of crumbling to their knees.
OR Dennis Whitaker has a difficult time taking care of himself, including learning healthy coping mechanisms, leading him down a spiral. Robby and Jack—already interested in the medical student—decided it’s time they take things into their own hands.

Summary
“Come here, kid.” One of Robby’s hands catches Dennis’s and lands against his sternum, trapping his arm against his chest, while the other stays in his hair, fingers winding into damp curls. Dennis’s attention is everywhere and panicked. He catches a flash of Perlah readying the needle and a desperate sound punches out of him.
“Nope, don’t look at that,” Robby says, using the hand in his hair to force his head back, angling his vision away from the commotion and up towards him. Dennis’s eyes lock onto his, pupils blown wide. “Look at me. Yep, good. I’m right here. You’re doing so good, honey. Just keep those eyes on me.”
The IV tourniquet snaps into place and panic flashes anew in Dennis’s face. ”Robby—”
“I know. It’s just Dana and Perlah. We’re just pushing some fluids, no more drugs. You’re safe.” Out of the corner of his eye, Robby can see Perlah speeding through what has to be the fastest IV placement of her career, Dana keeping her grip on Dennis’s hand to stop him from jerking away. Dana shoots him a glance of warning and Robby tightens his hold. “Okay, quick poke now. Still just us. Deep breath, Dennis. I've got you."

He’s eight again, he thinks. He’s eight again, and his dad just threw him into the kitchen wall after he had hid under his bed on Easter Sunday, because he didn’t want to go to church. It’s so boring, and it takes so long, and he wants to stay home and play with the lambs that were born just that morning. He thinks he can smell the earthy smell of the hay and soil from the farm, floating around and mixing with the antiseptic smell of the room he’s not quite sure he’s in. He’s eight again, and he had made his entire family late to the service, and he is a bad son. His eyes are closing again, and he tries something he hasn’t resorted to in years.
“Please, God,” he thinks, “let me be okay.”
OR
Dennis Whitaker hasn’t had contact with his family in years. After getting assaulted by a patient at work, he begins dreaming of his simple life before Pittsburgh; a small family farm in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Something deep inside of him is telling him to go home and rekindle broken bonds.
Except he really shouldn’t.

Summary
Growing up, Dennis Whitaker learned that being ill is a greater detriment to others than it is to himself.
If he got sick, it affected his family. Fewer hands on the farm meant more work for everybody else. Which, in turn, gave his brothers all the more reason to tease and bully him. He understood, though, that they always saw him as the runt. He learned from a young age that if he didn't attempt to work or pull his weight, he was a burden on the rest of his family.
Or
Dennis has diabetes and religious guilt, and a certain er attending helps him discover what it’s like to be known.
