There is a sudden crack when Mike is no longer seeing Will, but his floor. Nice tiles, browns and creams, tastefully uneven hand-placed little squares. Mike readjusts his glasses, which are so crooked they nearly slipped off his face, and now he can see the craftsmanship clearly. Beautiful work.
The left side of Mike’s face throbs with pain. He’s registering now, the feeling of an entire hand hot on his cheek.

He rummaged through the junk drawer in the kitchen and found his mother's phone book. His mom had always been good at updating it so he knew who he was looking for was in there somewhere. He flipped through the stiff and aged pages until he got to the B section. He went to the bottom of the page and ran his finger down it until it dragged over the name Byers. Bingo. There were three names listed under it. Joyce, Jonathan, and lastly Will. A scribbled ten digit number was underneath with a side note in the margin saying, Dorm. Wills dorm room phone number.
The first ring of the phone startles him out of his thoughts. Okay, maybe he actually can't do this.
A second ring. 'Yeah, nope. I'm hanging up,' he thinks to himself as he takes the phone away from his ear.
Just before the sound fully muffles itself away from his ear, a soft voice peeps out of the other end.
Its Will.

Mike was in stuck in a college dorm, with business textbooks collecting dust in his desk, wishing he could just rewind. Back to Hawkins. Back to that summer. Back to when all Will wanted was to play DND and this time Mike would just say yes.
His eyes drifted to the phone on the table.
The stupid beige one he only used for his mom. For Holly. Sometimes Nancy.
The longer he stared, the more his fingers twitched.
The clock next to it glowed 3:28 a.m.
He can’t. He won’t.
He repeated it in his head like a prayer, more to convince himself than anything else.

What happens when the only one who can help Will calm down after really bad nightmares is Mike? And vice versa? Will's boyfriend doesn't know, can never know, about everything that went down in Hawkins. It’s been months since Mike last talked to Will, and even longer since he’s seen him. But grief has a funny way of always showing up at night. So mike calls. And will almost answers.
