Noé swallows around the lump in his throat. “Why are you here?” He forces himself up and onto his feet. His legs are shaking, and every twitch sends throbbing pain rattling through thin joints.
He props one hand against the wall to support himself as he gets up. The chain of the collar clanks at the motion. Noé holds the metre or so of the slack chain dangling from his throat in a white-knuckled grip. The motion of standing leaves his chest cramp, his lungs breathless. Hunger rears its beastly head in his gut.
“I want to know Lord Ruthven’s secrets,” purrs Vanitas. He doesn’t move from his position from the floor, and doesn’t look the least bit intimidated by Noé. “And why it is that he’s keeping a vampire pet in his basement.”
