"So right then, looking at him, all passive, crouched against the railing, looking down at a village where both of them would never completely belong, like the words didn’t mean anything, saying that he’s gonna leave again as if it doesn’t change anything, like he isn’t taking his peace of mind with him, like a souvenir for the trip.
He searched for his eyes (those beautiful mismatched eyes), in hope of some certainty, like he did anytime reality felt too surreal, and he needed a reminder that Sasuke was, in fact, there with him, real and close enough to touch.
'But why?' He managed to say after a silence that felt too long.
Sasuke turned his face to glare back, the Rinnegan that once felt too disruptive in his face, against delicate chiseled features, and that he now was used to seeing, eager to find behind grown-out bangs that his friend was apparently too lazy to cut. But he didn’t speak, just leaving a neutral expression on his face, like it was obvious, and he should know, but wasn’t going to say it out loud."
Faced with the imminent departure of Sasuke upon his wedding, Naruto paces around looking for a way to make him stay.

Falling in love wasn’t on his to-do list, and being in love with Sasuke, of all people? Even less.
Because Naruto isn’t able to even entertain the possibility that Sasuke would love him as much, that love like this is something he can only give, never receive.
