    “I… Oh my God, Alex… I don’t… I can’t…” Henry cries and hugs Alex, holding on to the back of his hoodie for dear life. “I’m so sorry…” Henry says, mouthing over Alex’s neck. Alex looks over Henry’s shoulder, and his stomach drops.

    The moment Alex sees the sticks over the sink, he knows. He lets Henry go and takes a step forward, eyes widened; he can only feel his world crumbling and his heart breaking.

    Alex does not want that kind of relationship. He started out wanting a real partnership. He's tried but he’s never been successful at an emotionally intimate relationship. When he feels himself getting too close to someone, he starts looking for a way out. Too often that leads to sex outside of the relationship he’s supposedly in. His parents, coupled with the turmoil of his emotions, and his relationship history have led Alex to the illogical conclusion that he can not be monogamous.

    It is with that background that this AU story finds our boys in an open relationship. If you can’t bear to see Alex and Henry that way, scroll on. If you give it a try, know that it works as well as possible until someone breaks the rules. The story takes place over several years. Included at the beginning of each chapter is a reference to let readers know what the timing is for that part of the story. There isn’t a lot of fluff, but I promise a happy ending.

    It’s also a story about friends helping friends see what they are otherwise blind to.

    There is a constant sound in his ears -beep, beep, beep. He can also hear distant voices, but he doesn’t recognize them.
    When he opens his eyes, he blinks rapidly to adjust his sight. The room is almost dark, just a ray of sunshine coming through the window. He is confused: this room is not familiar, this is not his bed, and the walls are white, unlike the soft blue of his bedroom’s walls.

    When he tries to move his hands, they are weird. Something is holding them back. He lifts them and sees cables and an IV line connected to his left arm.

    He panics.
