The words hit like a punch.
Kate’s world went quiet.
Not silent, there was still sound, the hum of the TV, the distant noise of traffic outside, but it all faded into something distant, muffled. Like she’d been dropped underwater.
Her gaze locked on Yelena.
*Avenger.*
No.
No, that didn’t-
That wasn’t-
Her brain tried to reconcile it. Tried to fit that word around the girl she remembered, the one who had pinned her to the floor with a knife, who had threatened her life like it was nothing.
The one who had later fallen asleep with her head on Kate’s shoulder.
The one who had kissed her like she didn’t know how to stop once she started.
Kate swallowed hard.
