She's generally successful at this until Roderich takes a case involving a dead white émigré and an elusive, untouchable Prussian aristocrat, who is the last person who saw the victim alive. Alice could handle a murder case, she could even handle Weimar Republic politics, but handling those and Maria von Waldow, née Beilschmidt, proves tricky.

Not only that, but he's small, weak, and plagued with nightmares he is desperately trying to make sense of. And even in the wake of trying to remember and get better, there is room to fall in love with a nation he's always cared for but was never the right time. The past was never so simple. Instead of teleporting through space, he ends up teleporting to random points in time in his past and future with no knowledge of how to control it. He's given glimpses of the life he builds in Melini with Kabru years from now, and he's sent back to pivotal moments in his past that could rewrite the course of his life if he chooses to interfere. Once he gains the knowledge of what his future holds, will that change what he chooses to do in the present?
