Ilya grinned at him. It was a mean-edged grin but something about it seemed to suggest that he was joking with Shane, rather than about him. “Oh, he speaks.”
“We’re not here for an orgy,” Shane said to Jaw Man. “We’re missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

Hollander stepped closer to the windowsill. Between a pair of empty designer vases sat a cheap ceramic lucky cat, white, with one paw raised. Hollander brushed his thumb over a small chip in the glaze. Somehow, looking was never enough for him. Whenever he liked something – the picture in the living room, the leaf, now this cat – he reached out and touched. Ilya remembered how, the night of their first hook-up, Hollander had touched him first too: fingers curling around Ilya’s arm, as though physical contact were the only way to make sure he was real.

But there is nothing wrong with giving Chernysh all the pats and treats that he deserves, is there?

She’ll be here at 4, gone by dinner.” Shane delivers this news while placing his bundle down by the firepit. He stands and brushes his hands, then raises a smiling face towards Yuna and Ilya. Yuna will not deny she’s excited to meet Rose Landry, but the timing… if Ilya’s fixed glare on the rippling water was anything to go by, it admittedly could be better.
“Rose Landry is coming today.” Ilya says, confirmation rather than question.
“Yeah, I mean, she’s been so supportive and she’s been keen to see the cottage. I knew she was in the area but she didn’t think she’d have time to come by, but she does, and it seems like a good opportunity for you to meet her, and-"
