At some point during the exchange of vows, you take a quick glance at Strange, regretting it right after. A semblance of sadness and melancholy filled every inch of his face, and although there was a smile trembling on his lips, his jaw was locked in place. If it was out of anger or grief, you could not tell. But at that moment, Strange looked like a man stuck in the past, reliving memories from years ago that no longer held any meaning.

Her arms and legs were rather thin, her waist small enough that Ningguang was certain that it could snap if pushed hard enough. Long, dark, hair fell over her shoulders in a way that curtained her face. The ruby-eyed girl’s jaw nearly dropped.
Ningguang wasn’t quite sure how to pinpoint the worst part of it. Was it that Beidou was clearly starving, too poor to even provide for herself? Was it that she was hiding from something? Was it the bruises snaking along the side of her neck, disappearing under the neckline of her qipao?

It was quiet out. No soldiers running through the streets, no doors opening and closing in the Kiramman household, no hushed, passionate conversations happening beyond the doors to Caitlyn’s room. Just the soft, steady sound of Caitlyn breathing next to Vi. As usual, Vi was awake long past midnight, her heart thumping in her chest and guilt sitting like a bomb in her stomach. It had been days since she’d helped Caitlyn home after the explosion at the council building, days more since the funeral, days since she’d dressed in a plain black shirt and slacks that cost more than anything she’d ever owned in her life and watched Caitlyn and her father grieve by her mother’s graveside. The weight of her guilt didn’t seem to be easing at all. Every time Vi thought she had a handle on it, Caitlyn would reach for her hand or lean her head against her shoulder and she’d be right back where she started, steeped in guilt and self-hatred.

Sweat beads at her temple and drips down her angular cheek, where strands of pink stick to her skin. It’s chilly outside, and yet she’s feverish, more than likely from the stab wound and other knicks she might have obtained from the battle laid waste behind them.
They’re silent, staring at each other, as Caitlyn watches. Can’t find it within her to speak, even if the pressure against her throat is quite tight. She just stares, feeling something ache within her at the visceral mistrust and anger that dances within those steel depths.
“Small world,” She hears the woman say. Her voice is raspy, deep despite her smaller height, and there’s a challenge within them, like she thinks Caitlyn is going to try and fight her, “Seeing you here, cupcake.”

You're not supposed to find your roommate, best friend, and the only person you can tolerate school events with attractive. That's rule number one.
If you break rule number one, then under absolutely no circumstances should you admit to it. Vi knows the rule; she wrote it after first meeting Caitlyn Kiramman halfway through their freshman year at Piltover-Zaun University.
She has a good gig. Caitlyn is funny, sweet, kind, and she does her dishes without being asked. They have similar courses. Their friends all get along.
Sure, Caitlyn likes to thread her arm through Vi's when they walk, and she always wants to sit next to Vi anytime they go out. But that's just what friends do. So when someone jokes again that Caitlyn and Vi are dating and the taller girl just laughs it off, Vi always laughs too. Because you can find your roommate attractive, but you can't do anything about it.
That is until election results lead to Vi finding a very drunk Caitlyn just sitting on her motorcycle. Outside. In the dark. Where Caitlyn is very much not joking.
