There’s nothing wrong with ‘I love you’s, but they sit wrong in his chest, like phlegm polluting a pulmonary system that should’ve never allowed such things to coalesce. He thinks (privately, where no one he might hurt can hear) it’s a bit of a cop-out. He doesn’t want someone to love him; he wants someone to stay by his side without turning to dust. Rose swore she would, but she must’ve loved him too much. All it got her was false hope and unspoken empty promises.
