“If- Uh, I mean- If our breaks ever line up or- or something. We could hav- We could hang out.” The sentence ended there, and Eddie heard Steve swallow. “Or something.”
The suggestion hung in the air as Eddie was left reeling from the sheer bewilderment of the situation. A million things seemed to be trying to run through his head, all tangling into one massive ball of confusion. When his head finally snapped up to look at Steve, his eyes were wide, and watching him closely, the anxious movements halted, now just standing, staring. I took another beat for Eddie to realize that he was expected to say something. His brow furrowed, and his face scrunched in the confusion of trying to find what he needed to say.
“Why?” Was the only sufficient word that surfaced. It was a genuine question, the only one that he could think of at the moment.

A chorus of wolf whistles and peals of laughter sound out over the zipping of book bags and students flooding the halls.
His front-row class clown, Lucas, cheers, “Ow ow! Get some Mr. H! Who’s the lucky lady?”
Steve props up against the front of his desk with his arms crossed over his chest. “My partner finally has a Saturday night off so we made plans.”
Stopping on his way out of the room, resident boy genius Dustin spins on his heel. “Wait wait wait. You’re like, dating dating someone?!” He shrieks.
The teacher huffs out a laugh, these kids are not very observant. “Uh, I’m engaged actually.”
