Seven-year-old Charon loses his toy robot and spends three days searching — not because he needs it, purely on principle. Retrieving it from the garden steps, he witnesses something emerge from an old lawn mower's motor: a small, crackling, plasma-bodied Pokémon with divided blue eyes. Instead of fleeing, it drifts toward him and smiles. He names it Rotom on the spot — motor, Rotom, the link obvious — and a friendship begins.
They are inseparable but untouchable; Rotom's electricity makes contact impossible. Instead they find other ways to be close. Charon talks, Rotom listens, and a possessed light bulb keeps the evenings from feeling empty. Then a reckless impulse to startle Rotom ends in a wild discharge that knocks Charon flat — and when he recovers, Rotom is gone.
He searches for four days, rehearsing apologies, refusing to name the tightness in his chest. He finds Rotom at the rubbish heap, inhabiting the toy robot, one arm raised in greeting. He runs, drops to his knees, and holds it close until the robot pats his shoulder once, careful and warm.
He walks home with his chin up and Rotom glowing under his arm, already planning to document everything — and to make sure the credit is entirely his.
