Martin, the new clerk at the corner store, refuses to sell Jon his cigarettes because he isn't old enough, and it would be "illegal".
Thankfully, Jon is stubborn enough not to admit defeat. He just has to keep on trying.This isn't about the cigarettes anymore, is it?

He brushed a kiss to Ivan’s cheek - that cheek, scarred by the claws of the volcra, a scar that traced destruction down his handsome face, that gorged across his ruined eye. There was not a bit of Ivan that had been left undamaged when Kirigan had abandoned him in the fold.

Fedyor Kaminsky was born by the sea. His childhood was spent swimming amongst the salty current, heeding the song of the ocean like the call of the mother he never had. Then the Little Palace testers came, Fedyor was deemed a Grisha, and he was taken away. Still, he made a promise, to his older brother and to the sea itself: he would never forget where he came from.
The Little Palace had no ocean, but there was a lake. It would be close enough. What young ten-year-old Fedyor did not expect was to find another boy there, with a stern face and a stoic stature, dancing on the shores by the water. The rest was simple.
