“I wish she was gone.” Penelope’s voice was low but sharp, her eyes peeking at him from below her lashes, almost black and infinitely intense as her mouth moved against his palm and her body became a tense line. He held her gaze, frantically searching her face in rhythm with his racing heart before she closed her eyes and sagged once more. When she looked at him again, the iciness had disappeared entirely and only tiredness remained.
However, Colin felt alert, laser focused and centered once more. He took their clasped hands, that had drifted to their midriffs, and placed them on his chest, over the heart that beat for her.

“So I suppose there is just one thing left to discuss.” Colin stated, taking the glass out of her hand and placing it on the side table next to one of the plush armchairs, only to resume his position towering over her.
“What?” she asked, feeling slightly confused for a second. The confusion was short-lived, though, when Colin’s hands came to rest just above the curve of her plentiful hips and he dipped his head down low, stopping his mouth a hairsbreadth away from her own.
He smiled, his pupils dilated wide.

Summary
Colin Bridgerton was a rising British tennis star, who disappointed in his professional debut and struggled to find his footing amongst the ATP Tour for years.
His dreams of winning Wimbledon seemed further and further away when a knee injury sidelined him during his eighth season. The only bright side was re-connecting with his sister's best friend he hadn't seen in years, who reminded him to focus on what inspired him to play from the beginning.
Penelope tried to keep her distance from Colin, remaining as guarded as possible, but relented when circumstances kept bringing them together, preparing herself for the inevitable heartbreak that would consume her when he re-joined the tour and moved on with his life.
