Jim shuffled through the PADDs on Bones’ desk, found his personal PADD and powered it up. The open window on the PADD brought him to a halt. It was open to the last message, which had been sent to Captain Christopher Pike. Jim quickly scanned the message and felt his sense of disorientation and nausea returning. It was a letter of resignation. Jim dropped heavily into the desk chair and tried to get his mind to focus as he reread the document before him.

Bones resigns from Starfleet and Jim follows him to Georgia where he convinces Bones to marry him for legal reasons, so that they can contest the adoption of Joanna McCoy. They return to the academy, keep the marriage a secret and attempt to continue their lives as normally as possible. But the marriage is never far from mind.

Jim turned his attention to the PADD and quickly scrolled through the official documents. “It says here you’re ordered to report immediately to space dock.” His voice seemed calm and steady, but Len could hear the accusation faintly edging his tone, “You won’t be serving aboard for the shakedown cruise.”“The situation on Vestri is dire. I’m needed there, Jim.”
“You’re needed here, Bones.”
“You’ll be fine. I’ll be back before you know it.”
“When?” Was Len imagining the breathlessness? He tried to assess the Captain’s respirations but he cleared his throat and looked back down at the PADD, probably searching for the end date.
He wouldn’t find one.
Len sighed, “Probably a couple of months at most. It’s a shakedown cruise. How much trouble could you get into?”
