Summary
Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.
In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.
But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

Shane didn’t remember jumping the boards or tossing away his gloves and helmet, but next he knew his bare hands were grasping at the cold, drenched front of Ilya’s jersey. Whether it was the impact of another body or the strength finally leaving him, Ilya shakily sank to his knees, taking Shane with him. He heard someone from his bench scream for a medic.

Because, here's the thing. Ilya isn't actually jealous. Jealousy implies that there's a potential for Shane to be swept away by one of these random suitors. It means that there's an underlying fear that Shane will choose someone else over Ilya. And aside from the occasional depressive spiral that can lead Ilya to those thoughts — though that rarely happens after so many years of marriage — he knows that Shane would choose him over everyone. He trusts that Shane loves him just as much as he loves Shane.
Ilya knows there's no chance in hell that a random man flirting with Shane in a pet store would be enough to turn his head.
But what Ilya is, is fucking possessive.

BREAKING: NHL stars Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov both in a critical condition after car accident
The accident occurred at 9:47 this morning on the outskirts of Ottawa. The two players were travelling together when the car they were in was hit by a drunk-driver running a red light. Hollander and Rozanov have been admitted to Ottawa General, and are both being kept in medically induced comas due to the severity of their injuries. The driver of the other car is reported to have died at the scene.
The two hockey stars are famously rivals, and it is unknown why they were travelling together, or why Rozanov, who usually spends his summers in his home country of Russia, was in Ottawa. Are they secret friends off the ice?

Shane and Ilya are hit by a drunk driver on their way from the cottage to Montreal to help out Hayden. As they lie unconscious in their hospital beds, their secrets slowly start to unravel.

“Oh, sorry! I’m speaking too fast, aren’t I? Sorry,” she took a breath, and held out her hand. “I’m Yuna,” she repeated. The woman took her hand quickly, her hands bony and delicate.
“Irina,” she replied, before gesturing for Yuna to sit with her. Quickly, Yuna did. “Sorry, I have not been in Canada long.”
“No problem at all; welcome to Canada! Is that your boy?” Yuna asked, gesturing over to the child that had similar hair to Irina, which was poking out from under his helmet. He was taller than Shane, though his little hockey outfit still seemed to still dwarf him. He had a serious look on his face, but his eyes were light as he watched the other boys play. He was tapping his stick on the ice, clearly itching to get into the game.
“Ah, yes,” Irina nodded, taking a few seconds to translate the question, “Ilyusha.” Irina looked over at her son, a small smile on her face. “Is my Ilya.”
