Summary
Kisses Sweeter Than Wine - a popular song that comes from an Irish folk song, then notably adapted in the US by the Weavers (1951). I especially listened to the Jimmie Rodgers' version.
L'Aigle noir, by Barbara (1970) - The lyrics are inspired by a dream the singer had, and according to some interpretations of the song, the black eagle would represent Barbara's father who sexually abused her. The song has been used ever since as a symbol against child abuse.
500 miles, by the Hooters (1989) - The song is generally credited as being written by Hedy West (copyright from 1961), with other co-writers may be credited. “500 miles” is related to the older folk song "900 Miles", which may itself have origins in the Southern American fiddle tunes "Reuben's Train" and "Train 45". In their cover, the Hooters added lyrics dedicated to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

The laptop sat on the dinette table, lid up, screen angled away from the windows. I tapped the spacebar and the display woke: a dashboard, clean and minimal, four video feeds arranged in a grid. The upper left showed the exterior — the same parking lot I’d just walked through, captured by a pinhole camera hidden in the side mirror. The upper right showed the cab, empty. The lower two showed something else.
He drives cross-country in a converted Winnebago. The solar panels are always clean. The batteries stay charged. And the livestream never stops.
Thousands of viewers pay to watch. They pay more to participate. The girls come from all over. They apply. They sign the contract. They get in the RV. And they don't get out until he says so.
This week it's a girl he calls Savannah.
The highway stretches west, and the chat keeps scrolling.

When Grace gets seemingly teleported by means unknown into the SM-13 right as it was nearing The Light, both Simon and Grace have no idea what is happening. Grace knows he was supposed to be in his house on Erid, Simon knows this new guy cannot possibly be a hallucination, and Ava, upon hearing Grace ramble about theories for how he got there, knows that new guy is Smart. Could-Secure-Our-Survival Smart.
