Aiba, as usual, was correct. Date was hopelessly tired, hunched over his desk at an ungodly hour, frantically working through some paperwork that Boss was expecting on her desk in the morning.
Truly, he wanted nothing more than to keel over on his sofa and black out for a few hours but still he kept on working – Kaname Date, as usual, was being stubborn.

Mizuki Date and Kuruto Ryuki are not friends.
They don’t hate each other or anything. There’s just not much reason for a twelve-year-old middle schooler to hang out with a twenty-three-year-old special units police detective. It’s not like they share the same parents or are even familiarly related. They have none of the same hobbies or interests. By all practical counts, there’s no reason for them to be anything but strangers.
If it weren’t for Kaname Date, that is.

After the events of Nirvana Initiative, Ryuki's Leave of Absence is predictably extended to a full year but he's still occasionally called on to consult for certain cases. It's initially fairly awkward seeing as he and Pewter aren't particularly close. Nevetheless, the latter ends up giving him some much needed tough love.

“Ryuki… That’s enough for today.” She knelt beside him, placing her hand on his shoulder. It wasn’t much comfort in VR, but at least he didn’t shrug her off this time. He didn’t protest either, heaving, out of breath, hair wet with simulated sweat.
How many times had they done this now? How many times had he gone silent until she gave in, until she rendered the cathedral, simulated the gravity, and let him throw himself at the debris? He spotted the trap too late. She was acting like he’d admitted to committing murder or something. Date hesitated and turned his head away slightly before responding, “Only two or three times a week.”
Pewter’s face fell in disbelief that he would admit defeat so easily and Boss snapped the pen she was holding in half. “I take everything back. You are, in fact, very stupid.”
