Summary
Stiles will speak out in class, and in the rare times that his classmates laugh at him instead of with him, when the cringe and awkwardness overtake him and he rolls his eyes to himself with a sigh, his brain goes, “DerekDerekDerek.” Like a palette cleanser. Like a safe space. Something to snap him out of it and make him come back to himself.
When a customer demands something from Derek or tries to tell him how to do his job properly, and Derek wishes Stiles were here to give a witty response, or bat away the criticism, or when Derek walks away after the interaction, regretting the whole thing, he thinks desperately, automatically, “StilesStilesStiles.” And maybe he can breathe a little easier, after.
Neither of them are aware they’re doing it, until they are. Suddenly they’re reaching for each other’s names in their heads, as a poor replacement for each other’s bodies in front of them. When they’d rather be nestled together in person, the closest thing from far away is their names, so they keep reaching.
Or, five times Stiles and Derek’s names bring each other comfort, and one time they bring them something else.

“Stiles…”
“Yeah, buddy?” he says through a mouthful.
There’s a crinkle followed by silence, and he raises his head to glance over at where Derek is standing, still not far from the door. The man pulls a little plastic container close to his nose and hesitantly sniffs it. Stiles almost wishes he’d thought to film this glorious moment, but he actually values his life. Somewhat. Not enough to not do this, but enough to not film it.
“Is this-... Why is there whipped cream in here?”
To be fair, Stiles did also get him a double whatever-kind-of burger, with bacon! So he can’t be too mad, can he? Stiles really hopes not, because he can’t help snorting so hard he almost chokes on a fry. Finally, he clears his throat and says,
“It’s a pup cup!”
Silence.
“Because… Because you’re uh…”
“I highly suggest you do not finish that sentence. Not if you value your arms”.
“M-my arms?”
“Because I will break them”.
“Yep. Uh-huh, yeah no, that’s… yep. You got it. Shutting up!”---

Derek is tearing down the Hale house. Rebuilding on the foundation. He doesn't ask for help. Stiles shows up anyway — with a spreadsheet, a build schedule, and a group chat called "HGTV: Hell Edition."
Within six months, Stiles has nested so deeply into the territory that his scent is in the walls, he's wearing Derek's hoodies like they're his, and every wolf in the pack has quietly rearranged their life around him.
