Summary
“Would you marry me?”
Eddie stared at him.
Buck stared back.
The refrigerator hummed. The monitor hissed faintly. Eddie could hear his own pulse, which seemed dramatic and unhelpful.
“What?” Eddie said.
Buck looked down, then back up. “Not like. I mean, legally. For Theo. For the stability thing.”
Eddie’s mouth had gone dry.
Buck kept talking. He did that when he was nervous. Built a whole staircase of words and then tried to jump down it. “I know it sounds insane. I know. And I’m not asking because I’m freaking out. I mean, I am always a little bit freaking out, but that’s not why. I’m asking because if I had to pick someone to have legal standing with Theo, someone who already shows up and knows him and knows me, it would be you.”
Eddie said nothing.
Buck’s face tightened. “You can say no.”
“I know.”

Summary
“So is it Dad or Buck?”
Maddie blinks. “What?”
“Is it Dad or Buck?” Chris repeats. Chim and Maddie share a look. “Come on, it’s not hard to figure out. Something bad happened, that’s why Chimney is home early and you were just whisper-fighting in the kitchen. You’re sitting me down to tell me something, so whatever happened probably didn’t happen to Hen or Ravi or Harry, so. Dad or Buck?”
“It’s–” Chim starts and then stops himself. He moves and sits next to Chris and okay, maybe he was a little flippant before but now he’s starting to feel freaked out. “It’s both of them, Chris.”
Or, Buck and Eddie are both seriously injured on a call. Christopher waits for them both to recover, and copes with the possibility of losing the family they all worked so hard to build.

Summary
It unravels, somewhere between a strawberry milkshake and a burger that drips grease onto the Formica table, when Christopher says:
“I have to go to church on Wednesday.”
Eddie pauses with a fry halfway to his mouth and dripping in ketchup, and glances over the table at him. “On Wednesday?” he repeats. “For what?”
Chris shrugs one shoulder. “There’s a-a healing service.”
Eddie slowly sets the fry back down on his tray as Christopher takes a bite of his burger. “Healing service,” Eddie says. He’s trying not to jump to conclusions— really, he is, both because he wants to give his parents the benefit of the doubt and because if this is going where he thinks it’s going, he might actually lose his mind.
“Yeah,” Christopher says. “It might be a good idea.”

Summary
Because the Evan — in Eddie Diaz’s mouth —was not the Evan of his mother.
It was not, even, exactly the Evan of Maddie, though it had Maddie’s same warmth underneath.
The Evan of Eddie was its own thing.
Or,
How Evan came to sound like love.

Summary
Theo picks at the hem of his shirt. “Eli said it was weird.”
Buck frowns. “What was weird?”
“That I call you Buck.” The words land harder than they should.
Buck crouches down slowly. “Okay.”
Theo stares at the worksheet instead of him. “And Miss Jenny asked if maybe I wanted to call you Dad instead.”
Buck feels like someone shoved a fist straight through his ribcage. “Oh.”
Theo’s tiny shoulders hunch. “I didn’t know the right answer.”
Or
Theo is trying to figure out what to call Buck.
