  2. Summary

This series probably deserves a better name. Then again, so do the stories in it. I've chosen not to be concerned with it, myself. If you think the writing's good, the title doesn't matter. If you think the writing sucks, it also doesn't matter.

I don't really know what I'm saying here. This isn't a series description. It's a justification of my inability to write titles. I'll try again.

What I wanted to do with this series was take apart some of our conceptions about romantic love, and the idea that love cures all things. I wanted to dig deeper into the lives of characters who I believe deserve more than just a relationship. I wanted to justify these characters, and make them make sense in the context of themselves. If you want a story where Tony and Bruce just fall into love, and then into bed, solving every problem they have with themselves and each other? I wish you luck on your journey, but I am not that writer, and this is not that series.

    Summary

“We had to put the shade somewhere, Alice, and we were there to get mine, so I was the only one with a vacancy,” Julia says, words panicked and tight.

    “My—”

“It was in me, Alice,” Julia says, eyes big and brown and beseeching her to pluck the thoughts straight from her head.

“You can feel me,” Alice says, voice sucked dry of all the panic coursing through her. It doesn’t matter because Julia can feel it.

Magic leaves residue behind, big or small. It paints itself across everything you use it for. Glamors shine, healing spells leak, psychics make all kinds of tunnels between their mind and everyone else's, whether they mean to or not.

Alice’s shade had squelched all around Julia’s insides, leaving its sticky residue on every surface.

Or: Alice and Julia are unwitting soulmates.

And maybe the way that somebody can be good to you and then slowly corrode your muscles and organs and guts and skin and teeth is by never having been good to you in the first place. He feels this sometimes and it turns his head dull like a gunshot in a diner.

    Summary

Having lived his entire life in a small town obsessed with Christmas, Jonathan has grown to resent the holiday. It doesn't help that the influx of visiting tourists staying at the Byers Bed & Breakfast for the season makes it their busiest time of year. When Nancy Wheeler arrives feeling disappointed her boyfriend is stuck in New York for their vacation, Jonathan offers to keep her company while she does all the touristy stuff. It's only supposed to be a friendly favor, but the more time they spend together, the easier it is for Jonathan to fall for her. Is it so crazy to think Nancy would be happier with him than she is with her asshole big-city boyfriend who couldn't be bothered to spend Christmas with his girlfriend?

But then Steve Harrington finally shows up, and Jonathan realizes he might've been wrong. Not only does Steve not seem like the asshole Jonathan thought he was, but he and Nancy actually look happy together. Obviously, it's time for Jonathan to face the fact that his feelings are unrequited and move on.

It'd be easier to do, probably, if Steve and Nancy would stop inviting Jonathan along on their dates.
