Yelena woke up to the feeling of being watched. For a moment, she could not tell where she’d woken up. She kept her breathing the same as she attempted to register exactly where she was, then a cool finger brushed across her cheek, and she relaxed, breathing in Bucky’s comforting scent.
His arm tightened around Yelena, shifting her slightly in her bed. “Are you in pain?” Bucky murmured into the darkness, having registered that she'd awoken. Yelena opened her eyes, meeting his icy blue ones.

The conference room was packed as Bucky slipped in from the hall. Reporters hung over Valentina’s words as she made some promise or another to protect the country using her team, or was it with a nuclear weapon? Ava couldn’t say. She’d stopped listening about two minutes in.
Instead, she tracked the way Yelena seemed to lighten the moment Bucky entered the room. Like a weight lifted off her shoulders, the second that her gaze landed on him.

Yelena frowned up at him, not replying. Bucky was this close to tugging at his hair in frustration, “Why don’t you believe me?” he murmured.
Yelena supressed a shiver, “Because a part of you does feel that way, whether you think so or not.”
Bucky leaned closer. Close enough to see the slight blush adorning her cheeks. “You don’t know me well enough yet to know that, Lena.” He said, voice low and gravelly, “But if you hang around, you will. And then you’ll see that I like being around you, just because.”
Set in between 'drops of blood on concrete kiss my lips (but you won't)' and 'he is just a man (and so he doesn't)' in a sort of alternate universe than the one I've created.

Bucky stood slowly, approaching Yelena carefully as her gaze remained stuck to her own hands. There was no blood on them, but she felt the warm, crimson liquid on her skin regardless.
“Hey, I’m okay, you didn’t hurt me.” Bucky breathed, gently taking her wrists in his hands. Yelena shook her head.
“Come back to bed.” He murmured, but didn’t pull her towards it.
Yelena blinked, her vision blurring as she began to sob soundlessly. Bucky’s gaze softened even more, and he inhaled deeply, gathering her into his arms. She cried, his warm skin around hers only urging her on.

Sam narrowed his eyes at him, and Bucky scowled, voice growing defensive, “What? You think she’s going to corrupt her or something?”
“She’s a trained assassin, Buck.” Sam stated, as if saying that gave any sense to his accusation.
“Yeah, so am I.” Bucky growled, crossing his arms over his chest.

Yelena inhaled deeply, petting the stone. Bucky watched silently, close enough for her to feel his presence. She stood, fingers still attempting to touch the stone even as she stepped away.
Bucky followed, taking Yelena’s hand in his. She gripped it, eyes trailing on the pictures scattered around the still vibrant flowers and plants. Natasha’s smile and warm, green eyes catching Yelena’s gaze in every picture.

Bucky blinked, and in a flash, scooped her up in his arms, clutching her carefully. Yelena whimpered from the sudden move and settled her head against his chest plate. Alexei protested but Bucky ignored him as he whispered back, “Hi, love.”

Yelena’s hot breath fanned over his lips as she listened, then nodded slowly. She smiled a little, murmuring, “Then we’ll make the best of it.”
Before Bucky could respond, Yelena got up on her tippy toes and took his lips in hers in a suddenly heated kiss.
When they pulled away, she smirked, “So, is the dance over?”
Bucky watched her, a little breathless. He rolled his eyes, grinning, “No, that isn’t how a courtship works.”
Yelena rolled her eyes back at him, “Okay then, old man. Let’s go.” She pulled him towards his parked motorcycle and he followed, grinning.

He swallowed, throat constricting as his vision blurred. Yelena opened her arms, warm and inviting, and Bucky fell into her. She instantly wrapped her arms around him, tucking his head under her chin.
Bucky's hands wrapped around her waist and back, desperately pulling her to him. Yelena ran her fingers through his hair— it was shorter now. He’d cut it the week after his birthday.
His breath came in stuttered gasps, moisture running down his cheeks. She whispered soothing words to him in English, knowing Russian wouldn’t do him any good now.

Bucky sighed and stood, walking towards his room and grabbing the picture he’d taken with Sam at one of their Sunday lunches. He had to give Yelena some credit, the framed picture sat exactly as it was, with no evidence she’d ever touched it.
He waved the picture at her as he walked back to where she sat at the kitchen island. She looked entirely comfortable, cheeks a little flushed from the beer and grinning happily.
Now, Bucky was the one that wanted to take a picture of her and look at it unapologetically, whenever he felt like it. Like she had.

That raspy sound of joy that Bucky had only heard once before—at Walker’s expense when he tripped and fell over Bob’s pile of recently purchased books sitting on the living room floor. Yelena, who’d been cautiously hovering in the tower for a week, unsure whether she should be there (as an Avenger, no less.) had doubled over and wheezed over the kitchen counter as Walker made an incredibly undignified sound when he hit the polished floor.
