After their Christmas Eve get together winds down and everyone has left, Lena allows herself to really, fully relax for the first time since the morning. She emerges from the bedroom, having finally changed out of the dress she wore for the visit to the children’s hospital in the afternoon into something more comfortable just as Kara is setting two mugs of hot chocolate down on the coffee table. She sits down beside Kara, groaning as she sinks into the cushions and closes her eyes for a moment. She hears Kara chuckle, and when she opens her eyes again finds her holding one of the mugs out for Lena.

Kara stares out into the city, thumb tracing the top of her mug in silent, anxious circles. Her chest aches with vulnerability, something she never really allowed herself to show in front of Lena, not with the secret hanging over them like a shadow, forcing her to choose words carefully as to not reveal herself. Self-preservation is no longer an option.
"Both," she admits.

Lena's eyes are a little hazy from the alcohol she and Nia had been steadily consuming until Brainy and Kara had cut them off. She tilts her head, and those seafoam eyes soften and Kara's heart flutters.
They've been doing this a lot lately, this silence, observing the other. Kara supposes that it comes with this new territory, of allowing the other to see the vulnerable parts of them.
But Kara's eyes dip, gets stuck on the sweatshirt, on the way it hugs Lena's chest and leaves her legs exposed and her heart clatters its approval. Lena's expression turns coy and her shin rubs against Kara's and the sensation draws a shuddering breath from Kara's lips - that's never really happened before.
