“Tim,” Martin says one day, as abruptly as the lurching commuter train he takes to work each morning, “Does Jon—“ he cuts himself off, groping for a way to phrase the question that won’t seem utterly absurd; Tim stops, hand on the doorknob of the break room.
“Does Jon what?”
Martin tries not to fuss with his cuticles, the bowl of pasta salad in his hands suddenly unappetizing. “Does he eat?”
Jon’s far too old for this, and he knows it.
(Jon isn’t taking care of himself. Martin notices, and does his damnedest to help.)

“Do you think he’d mind me wearing my pride shirt to work tomorrow?” Sasha asks Tim over the phone, holding said shirt up in front of her. It’s an atrocious thing that Tim got her when she came out to him, it’s got a big 404 on it and under is ‘attraction not found’ in the aroace colours.
“I mean, it’s the first day of pride month, he has to.” Tim hums in response, then swears and there’s some sort of gun sound from a vintage video game that comes through the call, “If he has a problem with it, we could just report it as workplace discrimination or something. But me, I’m going all out. You know that bi flag button up I got last year.”
“I mean… I don’t think Elias would do much about it.” Sasha cringes, throwing the shirt on her bed, “He seems particularly happy about Jon being the head archivist. I’m pretty sure that Jon could murder someone and keep his job."

Tim and Sasha are nervous about dressing up for pride month because Jon, to them, seems like the old homophobic boss that grumbles about 'kids and their sexualities and blue hair.' Turns out, they were wrong.

So basically Martin flirts with Jon as a sport to see how far he can take it before he notices, inspired by that one post by murderandcoffee on tumblr. It started off as lighthearted but became a lot more hurt/comfort than I thought it was gonna be. Anyway for friendly workplace antics and nothing bad ever happening, this fic is for you!

“What about him then?” Georgie asks.
“Who?”
“Him,” she says again like it is obvious who she means, holding up the sketchbook revealing a spread that has several loose sketches of Martin. It surprises Jon it took Georgie so long to find Martin in the book considering he had at least one-third of its entirety dedicated to him.
To graduate from art school, Jon needs to paint a nude portrait, but none of his friends are too keen on modeling for him. As a last resort, he asks a handsome barista.

Martin stiffens, all the blessed peace that the past few minutes have given him evaporating as his brain shoots off in two separate directions. First is—well, terror, obviously. You take a naturally anxious person and they end up trans, not exactly a recipe for a lot of restful nights, thanks. Jon’s never given any indication that he might be transphobic, never calling Martin by the wrong name even though he hadn’t been able to legally get it changed until six months after he started working at the Archives, and he didn’t so much as blink when he saw Sasha pass a tampon to Martin one time. But still. Martin and fear are old, old friends.
The second direction is just mild incredulity at the tentativeness of the question. No, Jon, I’ve had a transgender pride flag on my desk for the past two years just because I liked the colours.
Martin gets a call from Jon. Nothing about what follows goes anything like the way he expected.
