The phone rings twice; Miles picks it up.

“Still on for today?” Phoenix asks, casually hopeful.

“What do you want from me?” Miles hisses into the receiver.

“Wow, not exactly the response I was expecting… but it’s not a no!”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Listen I do love me some Wrightworth but it's hard out here. When they get the characters right in the beginning, by the end it's like they sleep at the wheel and they're only unconsciously going through the motions. I was just thinking none of these fics really stick the landing (except Maya hanging out with Edgeworth, Samurai Secret, Hey-oh) until I found this one.

Finally. 😭😭😭😭 Finally!!! This is great!!

Why? I don't know! It's just great! Don't ask me!

    Yay!! 😭😭

The bet that got them together was ill-advised, but had a good outcome by the very end. It seemed like everything had worked out as they'd never dared to dream, from love to family to home. There was just... one thing still up in the air.

    Bookmarker's Notes

-previous bookmark on part 1 continues-

-in the shower- I literally wrote a better alternative. Wright marching up to Edgeworth in the hospital with the notebook in his head, confused, hurt, and livid. Wright POV. Miles trembling as he gives Wright's stone back after Wright thrust it on him (neat detail after Miles implying not believing in the stones truth). Miles getting visibly panicky, eyes wide and chest heaving, because he can see Wright's anger. (I'll do P and M for this.) M telling P to calm down. M repeating that he loves P, that he can explain, and P sees all of this is true, but he's so pissed that he says what if I don't want to know your explanations, that was an invasion of fucking privacy, were you talking to her about our relationship? And M is whining yes but (pathetic, crumbling) and P is ANGRY, saying ive had it, I'm done with you (basically breaking up), ripping the notebook in half, and then throwing it at M's feet. He can't bear to look at him when he leaves. P is flabbergasted M would allow himself to be included in something so horrifically exposing, especially including him.

M and P mourn separately. P is mad and mourning and Trucy screams 'daddy, please, stop, it's not like that'. He has to reign himself in for his daughter. M wants to talk to someone but he doesn't have anyone to confide in. P is his best emotional support, his sister would ridicule him, he didn't want to talk to Ema or his bet opponent, etc. Somehow a message goes through that P interprets as M leavings and P storms to wherever M is (o yeah it's his office), probably to talk to Fran, and is surprised when M hasn't run away like he always does, because that makes P mad too. 'You think you can run away like you always do? What about Truce?' etc. But M is wry and sad. 'We made engagements for me to be the caretaker of Trucy. You're right, I couldn't leave her ... Running never quite worked out for us regardless'. Etc etc. Somehow tears start slipping down M's face (being subject to the gloomy atmosphere of his scorned lover) and P is mildly concerned and M says something along the lines of, (I lost my baby) 'baby come back'. To which P says, only someone who cheated would say that and you.. (you never cheated, you only loved me) you did nothing wrong (even P is surprised by this, and that he means it). (Somewhere, either in the first or second (more probably) convo, P angrily mentions his ex and boundaries and how fucked up it was.) M says it was an innocent prank and asks P to consider whether he would take on a similar bet, should it be presented. He affirms he never intended to make P attracted- remember Ema's first notes?- never considered it possible, and that everything that followed was unavoidable (and that the bet was motivation, earlier). The bet paled in comparison to the happiness M felt. Eventually somehow P suggests focusing on evidence to stabilize the mood, bartering (eventually M would have to prosecute and P defend M) and P admitting he'd need a few days to collect evidence (and to harden himself to do it- because yeah, this hurts him, and he talks about it, talks about his ex, and M listens, which curtails Ps anger) (also P also quietly cries at some point) to which M laughs (brokenly) softly saying he doesn't think he could handle that right now. To which P then kisses him, both of their faces tear streaked, really slow. It's basically a promise that they'll fix it, that they aren't broken up yet. Good on both their souls.

Honestly, this fixes character resolution. P's anger shows still but M's fatal character flaw of always running away is stopped (thank f god). The precious conflict resolution didn't stop that, everything was just fixed when M ran away, which makes no f sense. P should believe Fran when she said M left (she said that to get P off her case) and M should subvert his expectations of endless disappointment. M should be better with logic and would give P the stone. Ema's first notes hold significance and ties everything back.

And then when the first start of their relationship was jubilant, this broken and fixed one would be slower. M would lose the condo. He'd wait maybe a year or so to get it. P and M would initially be more cautious around each other. They'd have to earn each other's trust back from inflicting some form of trauma (P, his anger; M, P's ex) but in the meantime M getting closer to Trucy. They do get reasonably over the bet quickly as everyone talks about it and when they can laugh about it things get better. P can flirt with M again and M is eternally grateful for it. M honestly spoils Truce as apology. M slowly funds celebrations and emotionally leans on P again, with also private P exposing his own repressions. A slower but more mature relationship perhaps, to counterbalance the initial ecstatic desire. But they'll be okayy.

Miles Edgeworth isn't totally sure how he ended up in this bet to demonstrate the strength of his and Phoenix Wright's (entirely professional and platonic! really!) relationship, but he knows it's Klavier's fault.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This was my favorite fix ever before the climax. Why?

Funny and realistic. Characters felt like themselves within the relationship, with new trauma and journeys to work with. I enjoy a comedy, and natural comedy arises when you know the characters well.

Though technically the fallout was in character, it really severed a wedge between them that I don't believe was properly addressed. Pheonix Wright has an awful temper that doesn't extend to murderers as it does the people he loves having wronged him, and that is especially cutting to Miles. Them getting together was fantastic, with all the enthusiasm I believe they bought, but after such a severe fallout, I'm not surprised that eagerness was dampened. It honestly should have left them out if it for longer. Or, Wright should have given Edgeworth a few moments to explain properly instead of blowing up immediately... Because Edgeworth doing this all on the whim of the game is unthinkable. I would have thought their history would have served as a deeper security blanket.

What this taught me is that I value character consistency above all else. It creates natural character conflict derived from character flaws that make natural interesting tension, and it stops relationships from becoming lazy and the people in them defaulting to a caring romantic personality. The lightness of comedy is also something that I appreciated. Deeper angst isn't that great all the time.

This story fell short on convincing me that Miles and Phoenix were completely grounded and in character for the fallout and after, but the beginning, and Apollo and Kavier's relationship, for the most part, was expertly written.

A shame, because it was genuinely my favorite thing on planet earth before then. I hoped it would subvert my expectations. Alas.

-Important to mention- Unfortunately all other characterizations of Wright and Edgeworth suck ass on this website. Edgeworth is perfect here. He doesn't swear, he's gay but sexually stifled, he's severe. Wright has some of the disbarment edge but still is lighter than most fics and has some of that naive love creeping up and that anger. They stumble into romance without conflict well enough. I'm mad they stumbled out of it without good conflict resolution.

I strongly dislike the total meltdown trope that requires a grand gesture. If two people can't work it out reasonably among themselves, I'm not going to believe in their relationship. People need more examples of proper conflict resolution.

-my personal take to the conflict in the next bookmark, on marriage bed-

    Summary

Dialing a wrong number was no unusual occurrence. Everyone did it once in a while, and Katsuki was well aware of that fact.

However, possessing this knowledge made it no less aggravating for him to discover — a full two minutes into his rant about his day — that he’d been venting his frustrations to a complete stranger. As if that wasn't enough, said stranger was also inexplicably determined to hear his story to its end.

    Summary

"In a flash, Killua’s hand shifts into razor-sharp claws, nails elongating and veins bulging.  He holds it firmly against Gon’s throat, not hard enough to cut into him, but a warning.

'Who the hell are you?' he demands, voice low and dangerous in a way Gon has only heard on a handful of occasions."

An unknown Nen ability causes Killua to lose all memory of Gon, and he's extremely suspicious of the story Gon tells him of the life they allegedly share. Love, belonging, a cozy apartment with both of their names on the lease--it's simply too good to be true. For someone like Killua, that sort of life just isn't possible. For someone like Killua, Gon just isn't possible.
