The rain had faded into mist over the course of their conversation. Moonlight glistened on the wet concrete. Shadow looked up, and Rouge followed his gaze. Space Colony Ark floated above the full moon in the night sky. ‘I’ve already let go of my past. I left it behind, on that space station and in White Space. I’ve said my goodbyes to Maria, to Gerald, and to my old self.’ He gritted his teeth. 'I’ve moved on... but GUN hasn’t.’
In the aftermath of White Space, Shadow has resumed his work as a G.U.N. agent to distract himself from his grief. But civil unrest is brewing in the streets of Central City, and tensions are rising at headquarters. When G.U.N. asks Shadow to work with a children's hospital to help them avert a public-image crisis, he is confronted with his past once again. Even though this PR stunt was clearly designed to exploit his history and Maria's story, Shadow realises that it could also allow him to pursue his original purpose as a cure. But as he searches for new meaning in the hospital's corridors, his past becomes mainstream news; corruption seeps through the cracks in GUN's facade, and the shadow of Space Colony Ark looms over humanity once again...

Summary
Her eyes meet with the eyes in the cage.
Terrified, glassy grey eyes that bulge from their sockets, an animalistic frenzy in their rectangular pupils.
Eyes that…are closer to her own than an octotrooper’s. Both framed by anemic-red tentacles with the suckers on the top rather than the bottom. She can’t see their mouth, as it’s obscured by a metal tube-feeding mechanism anchoring their head to the rest of the cage, but she doesn’t have to imagine what it looks like underneath.
Her gut wrenches. This is worse than any kind of octotrooper. Far, far worse. An octoling, a girl her age. A girl far more like her than any other octarian.
A girl who used to be like her.
Three’s quest to retrieve the great zapfish grinds to a halt when Octavio throws a hastily cobbled-together Octostomp back in her face—a move mostly to buy himself some time to prepare for the inevitable showdown, and it works. But not for the reason he expects.
