Maybe he was sick, broken, faulty goods, spoiled beyond repair. Maybe his past had truly broken something in him; his ability to feel any sort of emotion, and all that was left was a hollow shell, a puppet, a grotesque masquerade of the person he could have been.
He was sick. It was the only explanation, why his entire body burned and ached and seemed to degrade, disintegrate, deteriorate.

They spent hours playing card games, he balanced dice and chips between his fingers with a deftness she couldn’t hope to emulate. It was disconcerting, and, like the absolute coward she was, Vashara acted as if she hadn’t noticed a thing.)
They went back and forth like that for a few more minutes, but the conversation had fizzled out decently fast after that. Ratio had work to do and Kakavasha wanted to keep showing her around, but Vashara had walked away from it with a deep truth settling in her bones.
She, Vashara of Sigonia, hated Veritas Ratio with every part of her being.
Aventurine's sister is alive and is overjoyed to finally reunite with her brother after all these years. She's less thrilled about his choice in partners.

Summary
The scars on Jiaoqiu’s back are just as wide and deep. It looks like flesh has been carved out of him. Debriding the wounds was necessary, of course, to rid them of the necrosis, but it leaves behind a sobering sight.
Moze finds himself lingering a little longer. It’s not an unpleasant task. He wasn’t able to save Jiaoqiu from the borisin, but he can do this, at least. And Jiaoqiu’s shoulders have lost some tension since he started. The sight may be sobering, but Moze feels peaceful, too. There’s no danger here. Just a simple task that he’s good at.
He wonders what it would feel like if it was just his hands on Jiaoqiu instead of the towel.
(Back on the Yaoqing, Jiaoqiu gets put on leave and Moze is assigned to watch him. He end up helping Jiaoqiu with some things. He ends up realizing some things, too.)

“Describe it for me,” Jiaoqiu requests softly, knowing that he isn’t truly alone.
For a long moment, there’s no sound in response save for the rustle of leaves. It’s as if Jiaoqiu is standing by the railing by himself, accompanied only by the distant sound of waves and the wind through the trees.
Eventually, there is a faint presence at his side and Moze speaks.
“... It’s cloudy.”
Jiaoqiu laughs, and his laugh is all that sounds out in the scant space between them. Only the brush of Moze’s sleeve against his tells Jiaoqiu that he is not alone.
“They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so surely the scenery is worth more than two,” Jiaoqiu says, teasing. He grins, knowing full well that words come harder to Moze than himself. Even so, he can’t help but lilt his voice into playfulness as he asks, “Will you try again, Moze? For me?”
The sleeve brushing his own shifts, and when it settles, it’s ever so slightly closer. Jiaoqiu doesn’t truly expect a response, but -
“I will,” Moze says.
Moze’s voice is nearly carried away by the breeze, but the softness of his tone speaks volumes more than what he says.

Kakavasha's riskiest gamble pays off, and he is hired by the Interastral Peace Corporation as Aventurine. A second chance at life, if he can survive it.
Without a Synesthesia Beacon, every conversation is a puzzle, a bluff. The new Stoneheart has learned to fake fluency in the IPC's language, Universalis, the same way he learned everything else: through observation and context, by slipping through the cracks with charm and deception.
That is, until Dr. Ratio cares enough to scrutinize him, and refuses to look away.
