He shrugs. "'Not that hungry, I guess." His shoulders are hunched, and he coughs into his elbow like he's been coughing all evening—rough and deep, from the bottom of his lungs. Everyone gets paler as the Chicago sunlight contracts, but tonight he's so washed out she can count the smattering of freckles across his nose.
It pricks warning bells in Anna's brain. She was well acquainted with his strange eating habits, but she can always count on him being ravenous after a 20-hour shift. Someone less perceptive might chalk his haggard appearance to too many double shifts in a row and terrible lighting. But when she looks at him—really looks at him—she sees a heaviness that comes from being more than just worn out.

Carter gets sick. Anna realizes that his family caretaking methods were less than ideal, and shows him the kind of care he deserved.

Summary
All throughout the procedure, Peter half expects Carter to burst in, panting, sweating, full of apologies and claiming some excuse: the El was delayed, he'd overslept, his apartment had burned down again. Peter would brush him off and kick him out of the operating room, then send him to do his scut work and really think about his commitment to this program.
But Carter never shows.

After Gant's death, Peter shuts Carter out. When Carter goes missing, Peter fears the worst and vows to stop at nothing to find him.

He puts his fingers to Carter’s neck, and is horribly unsurprised at the weak, thready, and extremely rapid pulse he feels beneath the skin. Tachycardic. Very tachycardic.
A hand on John’s forehead is all but confirmation of Peter’s fears. His face is blazing hot, more like touching a furnace than human skin.

“Hello, Doctor Benton. I’m calling from the Frederickson Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. I have you listed as the emergency contact for John Carter?”
“What’s happened.”
“I’m afraid that a few hours ago, Doctor Carter was admitted to the hospital with some very serious injuries.”
“What kind of injuries, exactly?”
“Doctor Benton, he was bleeding significantly from his left arm and wrist. It appears… Well, it appears he made an attempt on his own life.”

He tries to speak, not to answer the question but to ask for help, help, anyone, anyone at all, his mom or one his brothers or the youth pastor who gives him bandages when no one is looking, just, God, please, please—
The best Dennis can manage is a deep gurgle from his throat.

Things have been good, lately.
Trinity has been good. She likes going to work—likes the thrill of particularly difficult cases, likes the easy back-and-forth she’s starting to build with her coworkers, even likes arguing with Langdon. She likes her little apartment and she likes that she gets to share it with Dennis. (It’s way cleaner, now, and she eats real food half the time. And she has something to do in the evenings other than think about everything she’s lost).
Things have been good.
She should’ve fucking known what would happen if she let her guard down.

Trinity is cornered on her way home from work. She gets out of it with a stab wound and a whole new wave of old trauma. (And of course, her least favorite coworker is the only one there to talk her down.)

Robby had just settled his glasses on his nose after doing handoff with Jack so that he could finish up his backlog of charts and go home at a somewhat reasonable hour when Santos stepped up to the corner of his desk with her arms crossed and something approximating a scowl on her face.
“Can I… help you?” Robby asked, slightly unnerved by the sudden appearance and honestly weird fucking energy that he was getting from his intern. But then again, he was often unnerved by Santos. She had this very abrupt, abrasive way about her most of the time, like she had a chip on her shoulder and was terrified of anyone ever seeing that minuscule crack in her armor, but then she could pivot seemingly out of nowhere to be incredibly open and compassionate.
“Whitaker is graduating next week,” Santos said in that clipped tone that she had. Like this was information that Robby should have already been aware of and she was irritated at having to be the one to give it to him.Bookmarked by NullsVoid
